Outgoing BFI festivals director Tricia Tuttle has joined the National Film And Television School as Acting Head of Department for the directing fiction course. Tuttle’s role at the NFTS will be part-time until she completes her duties at the BFI following BFI Flare, the organization’s LGBTQIA+ film festival, in March, at which point she will join the film school on a full-time basis. Tuttle stepped down as festivals director at the BFI in October 2021 after a decade working for the organization. For the past five years, she has led the BFI London Film Festival and BFI Flare. Last year, under Tuttle’s directorship, the London Film Festival screened 164 feature films, including 23 premieres across film and TV, with highlights including the world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and the international premiere of She Said , starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan. EXCLUSIVE: Nick and Jon Hamm’s Free Turn Entertainment has hired Robbie Ashcroft as Managing Partner. Ashcroft will join London and Los Angeles-based Free Turn’s management team. He’s joining from The Story Lab and will work on its audio slate and new TV and film slate partnerships among other tasks. Ashcroft was most recently International Development Partner at The Story Lab, where he established a new development and production fund for “original audio projects with multiplatform potential” in partnership with Global Media and Entertainment. This led to the greenlight of podcasts such as John Sweeney’s Hunting Ghislaine . While at The Story Lab, which is the content arm of Japanese ad giant Dentsu, Ashcroft also managed a strategic partnership between the parent company and Yahoo to created mixed reality TV formats from an XR smartstage in Holborn, London. EXCLUSIVE: Dyllón Burnside, star of Ryan Murphy shows Pose , American Horror Story and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story , will make his London stage debut in Black Superhero , the debut play from British actor, activist and playwright Danny Lee Wynter . Florida-born Burnside will play King, a Black, queer movie star “with the world at his feet”, Wynter told Deadline. King is “an out, global film star,” Wynter added. “He’s open about his sexuality but he’s not open about his private life, about whom he dates,” Wynter explained. Although trans rights are now the subject of a simmering culture war in America and the U.K., that conflict is largely predicated on the increasing visibility of trans women at a time where self-ID is controversially becoming the norm. Stories of trans men, however, tend to go under the radar, and this remarkable New York-set debut from Chilean-Serbian director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz goes some way to redressing that imbalance. Featuring a pitch-perfect performance from Puerto Rican/Greek actor Lío Mehiel, so far mostly known for the Apple show WeCrashed and a number of shorts, U.S. Dramatic Competition entry Mutt feels like an important but — for reasons about to be explained — perhaps interstitial film in the history of LGBTQ+ cinema, being fully cognizant of the fact that it is set and was made in a between-time that reflects the lead character’s existential sense of limbo.
