Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Kicks Into High Gear With All April TCM Movie Programming Devoted To The Studio
Turner Classic Movies is devoting the entire month of April to celebrating the 100th anniversary of its landlord, Warner Bros ., with hundreds of films from every decade of the studio, plus a variety of interstitials, documentaries, shorts and Looney Tunes cartoons, as well as interviews with stars and directors focusing on the cinematic achievements of the storied movie factory. Viewers got a taste of the anniversary doings with a tribute reel of highlights of the first 100 years of WB on this year’s Oscar show . But that reel was nearly as much about the studio’s own homegrown output as it was about some classics it acquired ownership to through various transactions with the likes of MGM, New Line Cinema and others. Thus Oscar viewers saw such MGM movies as The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain, Ben-Hur and 2001: A Space Odyssey, along with NL behemoths like the Lord of the Rings and Austin Powers franchises stirred in the same pot as actual Warners “product” as … [Read more...] about Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Kicks Into High Gear With All April TCM Movie Programming Devoted To The Studio

‘Story Ave’ Review: Asante Blackk Stands Out In An Old-School N.Y. ’Hood Drama – SXSW
Naming a young Black man’s story after a transport stop gives off strong Fruitvale vibes, but Aristotle Torres ’ feature debut reaches back further to the hip-hop morality tales of the early ’90s, like Boaz Yakin’s Fresh or Ernest Dickerson’s Juice — the wave that immediately followed John Singleton’s influential Boyz n the Hood . Surprisingly, given Torres’ history of videos for the likes of Ludacris and Nas, the soundtrack is light on rap, using unexpected needle drops like Pavarotti’s version of “La Donna e Mobile” to score scenes of spray-can anarchy on the New York subway. In all other ways, however, Story Ave is very much a ’hood movie, in the sense that its young protagonist is both constrained and defined by the place where he lives, in this case the Bronx. That person is Kadir ( Asante Blackk ), a talented young artist tormented by the recent death of his disabled little brother. Kadir runs with a graffiti crew called Outside the Lines, headed up by … [Read more...] about ‘Story Ave’ Review: Asante Blackk Stands Out In An Old-School N.Y. ’Hood Drama – SXSW
As CPH:DOX Wraps, Copenhagen Event Charts Future Course: To Be The World’s “Most Important Documentary Festival”
CPH:DOX , the international nonfiction film festival in Copenhagen, isn’t shy about stating its ambitions. “The long-term goal is to be the most important documentary festival in the world,” says artistic director Niklas Engström. The 20 th edition of the festival, which wrapped on Sunday, saw considerable progress toward that objective, Engström tells Deadline. “It really feels like this is the year where the festival is taking off as an industry event,” the artistic director observes. “It’s been going in that direction for years. It’s been building and building, but it’s like some kind of next level that we reached this year.” Evidence of that came with the number of documentary world premieres at the festival – more than 100 of them. “We have a competition 100 percent consisting of world premieres. And I think that’s the next level, coming from where we were the European launching pad for Sundance titles — and still are,” Engström comments. “But now we also … [Read more...] about As CPH:DOX Wraps, Copenhagen Event Charts Future Course: To Be The World’s “Most Important Documentary Festival”

R.I.P. Jeanne Cooper
One of the grand doyennes of daytime television for no less than four decades, The Young And The Restless star Jeanne Cooper died today. She was 84. It was announced on Twitter by her son, actor Corbin Bernsen, who said she passed this morning “in peace and without fear”. At a time when soap operas are an endangered species on network schedules, the television industry should recall Cooper as an outstanding daytime serial actor whose portrayal of Katherine Chancellor’s complex but oh-so-entertaining small screen life became an integral part of loyal viewers’ extended family. Through bouts of alcoholism and amnesia, umpteen romances and wrecked marriages, incessant meddling mixed with sage advice, Cooper gave her popular character dignity, grace and authenticity. Little wonder that she received 10 Daytime Emmy nominations over her celebrated career, winning once in 2008 after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. She was also nommed for two primetime Emmys and appeared on … [Read more...] about R.I.P. Jeanne Cooper
