‘The Americans’ Exit Interview: Cast, Creators on Series Finale
(Warning, comrades: The following classified document contains spoilers for the series finale of The Americans.) After six seasons and 75 episodes, one of the best spy thrillers in TV history aired its last chapter – not with one last eruption of violence, but with an ending more muted and melancholy. Back in 2013, FX’s The Americans opened its story at the dawn of the Reagan era, following a pair of undercover KGB agents, masquerading as married D.C. yuppies Philip and Elizabeth Jennings. The series closed with the rise of Gorbachev and a thaw in the Cold War that its anti-heroes had been waging for decades. In between, head writers Joe Weisberg and and Joel Fields plugged fans back into the culture of the Eighties, with all its apocalyptic anxiety, bad hairdos and many, many catchy Peter Gabriel songs. ‘Samurai Jack’: How the Cult Animated Series Finally Returned to TV
Think back to 2001, when SpongeBob SquarePants reigned supreme on Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network was deep in the age of Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo — clever, talky animated shows who trafficked in wackiness and often took their storytelling cues from live-action sitcoms. Then along came a samurai named Jack: a laconic lone-wolf hero who uttered fewer words in a whole season than most toon characters spoke in a single episode. The creation of animator (and Dex-Lab veteran) Genndy Tartakovsky, this feudal-era Japanese prince was sucked into a distant dystopian future by a villainous demonic figure named Aku; he’d spend four seasons trying to return to his own era, fighting a variety of robots, assassins, monsters, mobsters, flatulent dragons and one very ornery, persistent Scotsman. From the very beginning, Samurai Jack was different than the era’s typical sugar-rush animated programming – its Kurosawa-esque visuals and … [Read more...] about ‘Samurai Jack’: How the Cult Animated Series Finally Returned to TV
‘Unbelievable’ Review: Pain Gives Way to Grace in Powerful New Crime Series
Late in the new Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, an attorney laments one of the many unfortunate ways that rape is treated differently by law enforcement than other significant crimes. “Nobody ever accuses a robbery victim of lying,” he notes. “But when it comes to sexual assault?” Marie (Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever) is accused of lying — repeatedly. The story opens with police arriving at the apartment building for at-risk youth that she moved into after leaving the foster care system. “I was raped,” Marie says plainly. As she relates the tale to the detectives assigned to the case, Parker (Eric Lange) and Pruitt (Bill Fagerbakke), we get brief, painful flashes of the experience, enough to strongly suggest that she didn’t invent it. But the cops and her former foster moms don’t feel right about certain details of the story, nor about how calm Marie seems. And as her story keeps shifting under repeated, ever more belligerent … [Read more...] about ‘Unbelievable’ Review: Pain Gives Way to Grace in Powerful New Crime Series
