Black Thought and Danger Mouse’s ‘Cheat Codes’ Will Make Old-School Heads Feel Seen

August 12, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

“Fuck a thick skin, I got me an exo-skeleton,” the Roots’ Tariq “ Black Thought ” Trotter spits over a lush, almost spacey track on “Belize,” a highlight of C heat Codes , his collaboration with producer Danger Mouse . The tough-minded self-assessment of that lyrics is not surprising, given his decades long history of being the most underrated MC who is also easily one of the greatest of all time. Fans know Black Thought’s voice over the Roots’ full-band, comparatively organic sounds. Here, his verbal dexterity mixes with actual sample-based hip-hop, a rarity in contemporary, mainstream rap. As for his collaborator, Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, Cheat Codes is his first pure hip-hop album since the DangerDoom collaboration with the late and much-missed MF Doom from 2005. He’s spent the intervening years producing for everyone from the Black Keys to U2 and this return to the sampledelic style he embodied on his 2004  Beatles-plus-Jay-Z mash-up breakout The Grey Album … [Read more...] about Black Thought and Danger Mouse’s ‘Cheat Codes’ Will Make Old-School Heads Feel Seen

Bryan ‘Brain’ Mantia Was There for Guns N’ Roses’ Most Unpredictable Era. Here’s What It Was Really Like

August 4, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years. All are renowned in the business, but some are less well known to the general public. Here, these artists tell their stories, giving an up-close look at life on music’s A list. This edition features drummer Bryan “Brain” Mantia. Guns N’ Roses’ 2002 Chinese Democracy tour and Tom Waits ’ 2004 Real Gone tour were such wildly different affairs that comparing them almost seems ludicrous. GN’R were playing arenas behind an outrageously anticipated album that wouldn’t land in stores for another six years, and there was so much chaos surrounding the shows — including a riot in Philadelphia when the band never showed up onstage — that promoters canceled the tour less than halfway through. Waits, meanwhile, played 11 intimate shows at small theaters across Europe and North America, and they … [Read more...] about Bryan ‘Brain’ Mantia Was There for Guns N’ Roses’ Most Unpredictable Era. Early James Wasn’t Made for These Times

August 11, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Early James doesn’t like it when his lyrics sound too straightforward. The Alabama singer-songwriter tends to approach things obliquely, adding an air of mystery and haziness that doesn’t just spell it all out. Sometimes he even does it to his detriment. “I like to confuse myself by what I even mean,” James says. “It’s like, what do you mean by that? I’m like, ‘That’s a fun turn of phrase. Does it make sense? No, not yet.’ And then you just make it make sense.” James had to do some sense-making labor for “Real Low Down Lonesome,” a duet with roots star Sierra Ferrell that appears on his upcoming album Strange Time to Be Alive (Aug. 19). Over a dramatic, flamenco-influenced set of chords, Ferrell coos about “an awfully strange gallows trick” and James murmurs about “striking matches just for fun,” vividly illustrating the potently seductive and dangerous attraction between two people. James had written it with Ferrell and Strange Time to Be Alive ‘s producer Dan Auerbach … [Read more...] about Early James Wasn’t Made for These Times
