DJ Premier ’s studio has the look of old Hollywood despite being in Astoria, Queens. The building, at Kaufman Astoria Studios, has arches and an archaic look that feels plucked out of the Fifties thriller Sunset Boulevard. The rap elder’s surroundings are at least fitting in their sense of history. DJ Premier, or “Preemo,” as he is called by Hip-Hop fans and rappers, is both an icon and a reverent student of the unlimited artistry contained within the genre’s past and present. He described himself to Rolling Stone as “obsessed with sound and volume.” And his new EP Hip-Hop: Vol 1 ., which dropped last month as part of Mass Appeal’s Hip-Hop 50 soundtrack, makes those passions known. Veteran publicist Cari Ross has joined Gersh as Senior Vice President of Communications. Ross, who launched and has run her own company, Balance Public Relations, since 2011, will work out of the agency’s Los Angeles office to oversee all communications, social media, imaging and press relations. This marks the first time Gersh has hired an internal communications executive. Ross begins her new role today. Ross has represented talent, non-profits, productions and events at her own company as well as ID, serving as Senior Vice President, and Baker Winokur Ryder as part of the Management team. Broadway’s heavy hitters withstood New York’s heatwave last week, with MJ, Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton selling out and Hadestown, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Into The Woods, Moulin Rouge!, Six, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King and The Music Man coming very close. In all, the 23 Broadway productions took in $27,682,655 during the week ending August 7, down about 6% from the previous week’s 24-show roster (gone was Company , which closed July 31). Attendance of 212,341 was down about 5% from the previous week. Among the sell-outs, MJ set another house record at the Neil Simon Theatre – the show’s fourth – with a gross of $1,746,901. Dear Evan Hansen took in $915,655, and Hamilton grossed $2,219,057.
