The Association of Talent Agents , representing more than 100 talent agencies, will hold a training session for members March 20 to review best practices for the prevention of sex harassment and discrimination. “The session will explain what constitutes unlawful sexual harassment, obligations under the law, including the California Talent Agencies Act and best practice policies,” the ATA told its members. “Our expert presenters/panelists will walk us through real-life examples and explore common mistakes. ATA’s blended training and educational session is meant to complement, not replace, your company’s policies and programs. We will explore examples of proper responses by talent agents when placed in the position of a ‘first-responder’ to clients that confide in agents.” The training session, to be held at the SAG-AFTRA Cagney Boardroom, will be chaired by ATA executive director Karen Stuart, a commissioner on the Anita Hill-led Commission on Eliminating Sexual … [Read more...] about Association Of Talent Agents Sets Date For Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Session

The End Of Packaging Fees: The WGA’s Historic Campaign To Reshape Talent Agency Business Takes Full Effect Today – Q&A
The WGA ’s historic reshaping of the talent agency business will take full effect at the end of business today, after which agency packaging fees will no longer be permitted under the guild’s franchise agreement. “The agency campaign was founded on the simple truth that agents are our fiduciaries,” said WGA West president Meredith Stiehm, who was one of the named plaintiffs in the guild’s long-running anti-trust lawsuit against the “Big 3” talent agencies. “The interests and priorities of agencies and their writer clients must be aligned. Our campaign had three main goals: end the collection of packaging fees, put a halt to the conflict of interest of agency-owned studios, and for the agencies to share information, which the WGA uses to fight late pay and free work. Thanks to the resolve and unity of the membership, we’ve achieved those goals. Today, as we mark the beginning of the end of packaging fees, we move forward with our agency partners to improve writers’ compensation … [Read more...] about The End Of Packaging Fees: The WGA’s Historic Campaign To Reshape Talent Agency Business Takes Full Effect Today – Q&A

As Packaging Comes To An End, Squabbles Over Grandfathered Projects Likely To Continue
It has been a long goodbye for packaging since the WGA and the major agencies’ new franchise agreements, signed in 2020-21 after an epic fight, included a “phase-in of packaging fee prohibition” period that ends tonight. But while for the WGA “it’s the end of new packages on guild-covered projects going forward,” per WGA West assistant executive director Ellen Stutzman, I hear that WME , CAA and UTA may not feel that way. Different interpretations of the language in the agreement could trigger dozens of arbitration proceedings, with studios stuck in the middle of potential disputes. After a 22-month standoff, the WGA’s campaign targeting what the guild referred to as “conflicted agency practices” of packaging and affiliated production come to a successful end in February 2021 when the last holdout, WME, signed a franchise agreement stipulating that an “agent’s right to negotiate packaging fees shall terminate on June 30, 2022,” while limiting agencies’ ownership in … [Read more...] about As Packaging Comes To An End, Squabbles Over Grandfathered Projects Likely To Continue

Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
Whispering Bill Pifer is dying. The cancer growing in his throat has now all but choked off his raspy voice. A lip reader stood beside him and interpreted his words to the courtroom. They came slow and measured, the damning silent words of a dying Hell’s Angel. “ I understand I would have complete immunity,” Pifer’s lips said. “I won’t testify without it. The time I have left, I want to spend on the street.” Sonny Barger, 33-year-old president of the Hell’s Angels, supposedly talked too much to Whispering Bill while they were both in the Alameda County Jail in Oakland, California. The cold-eyed Barger has a reputation as a braggart, and this time, according to police, something he and Whispering Bill talked about led them to the hilly grasslands near Ukiah in far northern California, where police found three bodies stuffed into abandoned wells on a 153-acre ranch owned by the Angels. Big Tom Shull, 24, and Charles Baker, 30, had both been strangled. Their bodies had been in the … [Read more...] about Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
Peter Bart: What Would Viacom Look Like If Tom Freston Hadn’t Been Fired For Losing MySpace To Murdoch?
Amid the orgy of congratulation and self-congratulation last week, it was difficult to find anyone pumping the hand of Philippe Dauman . It was exactly 10 years ago that the Viacom CEO took office, yet today he takes the rap for putting his company on the corporate casualty list. In assuming his duties a decade ago, Dauman delivered a stern lecture to his subordinates. “Never let a competitor beat you to the trophy,” he intoned. The “trophy” at that moment was not an Oscar. It was a site called MySpace , which Rupert Murdoch had just bought for a numbing $580 million (he later dumped it for $35 million). Dauman’s boss, Sumner Redstone , had coveted MySpace and was so angry about losing it to Murdoch that he fired his then-CEO, Tom Freston . One of Dauman’s first moves was to dispose of Viacom’s stake in a new company called Vice for $3 million (it now values itself at around $4 billion.) And so began the vicissitudes of Viacom — one of the fascinating corporate … [Read more...] about Peter Bart: What Would Viacom Look Like If Tom Freston Hadn’t Been Fired For Losing MySpace To Murdoch?
Crisis Responder: What It’s Like to Be on the Front Lines
Samantha Greene is a licensed clinical social worker who spent three years working as a crisis intervention specialist at a call center in Dallas. Every interaction with our Mobile Crisis Outreach Team began with a phone call. They came 24 hours a day from school personnel, homeless shelter staff, police and probation officers, family members, or unrelated good Samaritans. Other clients called seeking assistance for themselves, hoping to find relief for chronic insomnia at 3:47 am, obtain a safe place to sleep for the night, or alleviate a seemingly intolerable amount of emotional pain. A handful of headset-donning mental health professionals answered these calls from cubicles in a windowless room inconspicuously housed in a Texas strip center. From there, our small but dedicated team was charged with meeting the crisis needs of our communities in Dallas and its surrounding counties. In May, The horrific homicide of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer ignited an … [Read more...] about Crisis Responder: What It’s Like to Be on the Front Lines
