UPDATED with video: John Boyega won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Supporting Role on Sunday for his work in Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe . Boyega, who rose to prominence in the Star Wars franchise, played Leroy Logan in the “Red, White and Blue” segment of Small Axe, about the ordeal of a young black Londoner set on helping to break the color barrier at London’s Metropolitan Police Force in the early 1980s. He whipped through his acceptance speech from his home in London tonight, thanking Amazon in the UK, the BBC and McQueen. He also confessed to wearing track pants below his camera. 78th Golden Globes is the first big awards show of 2021. The ceremony is being held on two coasts for the first time with presenters on the stage while the nominees and winners attend from the safety of their home. The show is currently underway in a hybrid fashion for the first time due to the growing numbers of COVID-19 cases all across the globe. However, reports revealed that the ceremony did see some live audience made up of frontline workers and first responders. The ceremony held on Sunday night (February 28) was hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey from Los Angeles and New York. Some of the top nominated films were Mank with 6 nominations, followed by The Trial of the Chicago 7 with 5. This strangest of awards season gets official tonight with the presenting of the 78th annual Golden Globes Awards , and Deadline will be updating the winners list live as trophies are handed out in 25 categories — 14 for motion pictures and 11 for TV. Nomadland picked up Best Motion Picture Drama, while fillmmaker Chloé Zhao won Best Director, becoming the first woman to win that prize since Barbra Streisand in 1983 for Yentl . Borat Subsequent Moviefilm also won two trophies, Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for star Sacha Baron Cohen .
