Deborah Barak , one of the most prominent, influential and beloved TV business executives of the past three decades, died today, Jan. 21, after a long battle with cancer. She was 65. Barak’s passing comes just two years after she left CBS at the end of 2020. During her 35 years at the company, rising to President of Business Operations, she created deal templates and introduced business models that have since become industry standards. A skilled negotiator who was highly respected by her peers, Barak — known to all as Debby — led the network’s and studio’s highest-profile negotiations. South by Southwest on Wednesday revealed the second half of its lineup for this year’s edition, set for March 10-19. This includes Visions, the Global section presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to the Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight and other sections. New on the sked is Janine Nabers and Donald Glover ’s Amazon Studios series Swarm and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef , respectively the opening- and closing-night TV premieres. They join the previously announced opening-night world premiere of Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves . This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. The WGA is gearing up for upcoming contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, arguably its most important in over a decade. This has prompted a group of top writers to look back at the lessons learned from the 2007-08 writers’ strike to see what can be applied to this year’s talks. Local L.A. TV Anchor Tony McEwing Announces Retirement On Air During ‘Good Day L.A.’ After 30 Years At Fox 11
A fixture on TV in Los Angeles for 30 years, Fox 11 anchor Tony McEwing announced today on Good Day L.A. that he is retiring. His final broadcast will be February 3. “For the better part of 30 years, I have sat here delivering the news in all of its forms and facets—the good, the bad, the ugly, the inspiring, the amusing, and the awesome. I cannot begin to tell you how honored and blessed I feel to have the career I’ve had,” McEwing said on air. “But of course, nothing lasts forever, and I think the time has come for me to finally hang up my mic after a journey that has spanned 43 years in total.” McEwing has has anchored the early shift of the Fox 11 Morning News on KTTV since its 1993 launch. Penn State’s Pat Chambers Resigns, New Allegations After ‘Noose’ Comments
Getty Penn State basketball coach Pat Chambers resigned Wednesday -- following an investigation into new allegations of misconduct. The University says the new allegations were made following a report by The Undefeated back in July that Chambers made racially insensitive comments to a black player. The player, Rasir Bolton , told The Undefeated that Chambers made a comment to him referencing a metaphorical "noose" back in 2019. Bolton claims Chambers approached him and said, "I want to be a stress reliever for you. You can talk to me about anything. I need to get some of this pressure off you. I want to loosen the noose that's around your neck." Bolton said of Chambers' comment, "Due to other interactions with Coach, I knew this was no slip of the tongue." ‘The Cleaning Lady’ Renewed For Season 3 At Fox; Jeannine Renshaw Joins As EP & Co-Showrunner
