The BBC has been told that it must be more transparent about its content acquisitions strategy after being accused by ITV of buying glossy U.S. shows to chase ratings. Ofcom , the UK’s media regulator, said the BBC must explain in its Annual Plan how buying content, as opposed to commissioning British originals, supports “distinctiveness” and engages different audiences. The BBC is funded by the British public to the tune of £3.8B ($4.7B), meaning it has an obligation to be distinct from commercial rivals like ITV and serve all audiences. Ofcom made the intervention as part of plans to update the BBC’s operating licence for a digital age from next month. A guiding principle of the changes is transparency, with Ofcom arguing that the BBC has not always provided proper “detail and clarity” on updates to its output and services. Droughtlander is nearly over as Starz has set the premiere date for Outlander ‘s seventh season for Friday, June 16, at midnight ET via streaming and internationally on the Lionsgate+ premium streaming platform in the UK. For linear viewers, the show premieres on the same day, at 8 p.m. ET/PT in the U.S. New episodes will be released weekly Fridays. Fox is doubling down on a pair of freshman crime dramas. The network has renewed both Accused and Alert : Missing Persons Unit for second seasons. Both shows come from Sony Pictures Television. The renewal of Howard Gordon’s crime anthology series Accused was expected, given that it opened strong with a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demo and 8.4M viewers on live+same day data and grew to more than 11.3M multi-platform viewers and a 2.3 rating in the demo in the three days after its premiere, making it broadcast’s highest-rated debut in nearly two years, since the premiere of NBC’s Law & Order: Organized Crime in April 2021. It looks like Bravo dodged a bullet with its planned Vanderpump Rules Season 10 reunion that’s taping today and whether it would run into problems by having stars Raquel Leviss and Scheana Shay in the same room. Leviss’s attendance at the reunion came into question after she filed a restraining order against Shay following an alleged physical altercation. But a seating chart tweeted out by Bravo shows that the women will participate in separate segments. Deadline also confirmed that the women will have separate dressing rooms and trailers (which is typical for reunions like this, anyway, because of, well , those Bravo women being Bravo women and all). Hundreds of WGA East members employed at Hearst Magazines Media staged a half-day walkout and rally today to demand a fair contract. The walkout at four of the company’s offices – in New York City, Easton, PA, Ann Arbor, MI, and Birmingham, AL – comes after more than two years of negotiations for a first-time contract. The last scheduled day of negotiations is March 28. According to the guild, they’re seeking “fair wage increases, better severance and strong anti-harassment protections,” among other demands. Outer Banks took over Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart for the week of February 20 to 26. Following the release of Season 3 on February 23, the Netflix series drew nearly 3.2B viewing minutes during that measurement interval. According to Nielsen, nearly 1B of those viewing minutes (roughly a third) came from Seasons 1 and 2, suggesting that the release of the third installment attracted many new viewers as well as re-watchers. Nielsen doesn’t generally indicate viewing by season, so this gives interesting insight into how much of the viewing from this interval came from Season 3. Netflix self-reported that all three seasons were among its Top 10 English-language series for that week. Audiences were also enthralled by Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal , which generated about 1.4B viewing minutes and came in at No. 2 on the overall streaming list. Imagine Entertainment co-founders, Oscar winners and USC School of Cinematic Arts alums Brian Grazer and Ron Howard will deliver the school’s commencement address in May, the university said Thursday. Grazer, who also serves on the School of Cinematic Arts Board of Councilors, received a BA in Psychology at USC in 1974. Howard attended courses at the School of Cinematic Arts. Both received honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees from USC in 2022.
