EMMERDALE viewers were tonight rejoicing as Rebecca White finally "came back from the dead". Her friends feared she had been killed by evil Lachlan White, but at the end of this evening's episode she appeared like ghost in a graveyard to a stunned Robert Sugden and his family. The mum-of-one has been missing for months after being taken captive by evil nurse Mrs Sykes on Lachlan's command and everyone in the Dales thought she was dead. So it came as a massive shock when Rebecca appeared in the graveyard dressed in a floating white nightdress. The scene started with Robert visiting his mum Sarah’s grave with sister Victoria, fiance Aaron and Rebecca's baby Seb. Then, out of nowhere, Rebecca appeared in the background draped in a flowing white gown. The stunned Sugdens and Aaron rushed over to hug Rebecca. Wait! Wait! There’s an Easter egg still out there — actually, there are a lot of Easter eggs still out there, floating about. Not oval colored ones. Square colored ones, made of pixels. The new Steven Spielberg film “Ready Player One” — adapted from a lovingly nerdy novel by Ernest Cline — is a kind of homage to the digital Easter egg, the inside jokes, quirks and cultural references tucked away quietly, at times annoyingly, inside movies and video games, waiting for only the most obsessive-compulsive to discover. In the film, if the hero jumps through enough hoops (literally) and finds impossibly buried Easter eggs inside a vast virtual reality, the game’s creator (with a nod to Willy Wonka — Easter egg!) will grant him the deed to the digital ranch and a Zuckerbergian mountain of wealth. In the real world, you only get bragging rights.Which was basically what Warren Robinett was looking for when he buried a single humble credit — … [Read more...] about ‘Ready Player One’ has more Easter eggs than the White House lawn. Mark Perez has written one of the tightest comedy scripts to make it to be the big screen in ages. Game Night, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, wastes not a single second of dialogue, gives killer lines to every member of its all-star ensemble, delivers genuinely tense action sequences, and even goes for broke with style. Do we finally have an American counterpart to Britain’s Edgar Wright-Simon Pegg team?Imagine the endless twists and turns and double-crossing of David Fincher’s rich-man-gets-kidnapped-for-fun-but-maybe-not? film The Game, told from the point of view of the kidnap victim’s best buds — and also, it’s, like, it’s hilarious. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams play perfect couple Max and Annie, and I mean “perfect” in the sense that Perez’s dialogue for them rings true of a real, thriving relationship, with quirky inside jokes and, in this case, a shared competitive desire to win every single game … [Read more...] about Game Night Is the Comedy Knockout We’ve Been Waiting For
After winning the Academy Award for best animated feature, “Coco” co-director Lee Unkrich summed up the spirit of the evening .“Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong,” he said. “Representation matters.”Just two years after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the academy’s efforts to increase diversity at the awards show seem to be paying off, at least somewhat. The name of the game at the 90th Oscars ceremony was inclusion. It was a night of firsts. This Oscars brought the first transgender presenter (Daniela Vega). The first sports star (Kobe Bryant) to win an Oscar (best animated short). The first black filmmaker (Jordan Peele) to be nominated for directing, writing and producing in the same year (for “Get Out”). Peele won the best original screenplay award — the first black writer to do so. “The Shape of Water” won for best picture and director. The theme of the evening was underlined when Ashley Judd, … [Read more...] about Inclusion is the theme on a night of firsts at the Oscars
