Robbie Robertson on Reworking the Band’s ‘Stage Fright’: ‘This Is What It’s Supposed to Be’

· February 10, 2021 ·

Ahead of a new 50th-anniversary reissue of the Band ’s Stage Fright , Robbie Robertson would like to apologize. “I made a mistake,” he says from his L.A. office. “And now I’m so thrilled that I could undo that mistake and make this record what I thought it was, and the experience I thought it was.” Recorded in their home base of Woodstock, New York, and released in 1970, Stage Fright was the Band’s third album, home to future concert staples like the title song and “The Shape I’m In.” But the running order of those songs, Robertson says, never sat quite right with him. At that point, the Band were in a fragile state — the moment “when everything changed for us,” Levon Helm wrote in his memoir, This Wheel’s on Fire — and for the sake of unity, Robertson says he began pushing the others in the group to collaborate on songs with him. They did, to varying degrees, and when Stage Fright was finished, Robertson put together a track sequence for the album, which would open … [Read more...] about Robbie Robertson on Reworking the Band’s ‘Stage Fright’: ‘This Is What It’s Supposed to Be’

Rush Limbaugh Did His Best to Ruin America

· February 17, 2021 ·

When Rush Limbaugh , the Great Bloviater of the AM dial, signed off from the “Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies,” two days before Christmas, he warned the faithful in the raspy remains of his famous trumpeting baritone: “The day is gonna come, folks, where I’m not going to be able to do this anymore.” For 13 terrible days in Trumpland — while the mad president that Limbaugh helped make possible was flailing for survival, while the faithful were trying to “ stop the steal ” of the election, and even while the Republicans blew their Senate majority in the Georgia runoffs — the loudest voice in the right-wing echo chamber remained silent. By the time January 6th rolled around, even the millions of fans praying for a miracle cancer cure had to figure: If Rush had passed up the chance to fearmonger about Raphael Warnock’s old sermons and mock Jon Ossoff’s hair, well, he must be finished. At least with his trademark golden microphone, if not with this earthly … [Read more...] about Rush Limbaugh Did His Best to Ruin America

The Feds vs. Goldman

· April 26, 2010 ·

O n the day the Securities and Exchange Commission filed suit against Goldman Sachs for securities fraud, shares in the company plunged 12.8 percent, closing at $160.70. The market, it seemed, was finally passing judgment on a decade of high-stakes Wall Street scammery that left America threatening Nigeria, Indonesia and Belarus on the list of the world’s most corrupt economies. A few days later, Goldman announced its first-quarter numbers. Profits were up 91 percent, to a staggering $3.4 billion. This article appeared in the May 13, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone. The issue is available in the online archive . Compensation and bonuses soared to $5.5 billion, up from $4.7 billion in the first quarter of 2009. Battered in the press, Goldman was raking up on the bottom line. So investors once again leapt into Goldman’s arms, pushing the stock as high as $166.50, not far from where it was even before news of the SEC suit broke. Goldman isn’t dead – far from it. But this new … [Read more...] about The Feds vs. Goldman

Spider-Man 3 Is the Most Exciting Movie of MCU Phase 4, Here’s Why

· February 12, 2021 ·

MCU's Phase 4 made an astonishing beginning with the integrated Disney+ series WandaVision, which has created several unique theories regarding the future of MCU. On the movies' end, Phase 4 is still set to begin with Black Widow being constantly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the most exciting and probably the most significant entry in MCU Phase 4 will be the unofficially titled Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 , currently dubbed as Untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home Sequel . While Spider-Man: Far From Home concluded Phase 3 of MCU , it left the fate of the wall-crawling teenage superhero on a cliffhanger, with his identity publicized by Mysterio at the end. Moreover, Mysterio also managed to blame Spidey for all his crimes, and thanks to J. Jonah Jameson (which marked J.K. Simmons' surprise reprisal of the role), Spider-Man will be a "menace to society" by the time the sequel drops in theaters.
