Dushku, the former Buffy The Vampire and Dollhouse actress, starred as the daughter of the characters played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kramer, who has long been Schwarzenegger personal stunt double, was the film’s stunt coordinator. Robbie Robertson on Reworking the Band’s ‘Stage Fright’: ‘This Is What It’s Supposed to Be’

· February 10, 2021 ·

Ahead of a new 50th-anniversary reissue of the Band ’s Stage Fright , Robbie Robertson would like to apologize. “I made a mistake,” he says from his L.A. office. “And now I’m so thrilled that I could undo that mistake and make this record what I thought it was, and the experience I thought it was.” Recorded in their home base of Woodstock, New York, and released in 1970, Stage Fright was the Band’s third album, home to future concert staples like the title song and “The Shape I’m In.” But the running order of those songs, Robertson says, never sat quite right with him. At that point, the Band were in a fragile state — the moment “when everything changed for us,” Levon Helm wrote in his memoir, This Wheel’s on Fire — and for the sake of unity, Robertson says he began pushing the others in the group to collaborate on songs with him. They did, to varying degrees, and when Stage Fright was finished, Robertson put together a track sequence for the album, which would open … [Read more...] about Robbie Robertson on Reworking the Band’s ‘Stage Fright’: ‘This Is What It’s Supposed to Be’

The Feds vs. Goldman

· April 26, 2010 ·

O n the day the Securities and Exchange Commission filed suit against Goldman Sachs for securities fraud, shares in the company plunged 12.8 percent, closing at $160.70. The market, it seemed, was finally passing judgment on a decade of high-stakes Wall Street scammery that left America threatening Nigeria, Indonesia and Belarus on the list of the world’s most corrupt economies. A few days later, Goldman announced its first-quarter numbers. Profits were up 91 percent, to a staggering $3.4 billion. This article appeared in the May 13, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone. The issue is available in the online archive . Compensation and bonuses soared to $5.5 billion, up from $4.7 billion in the first quarter of 2009. Battered in the press, Goldman was raking up on the bottom line. So investors once again leapt into Goldman’s arms, pushing the stock as high as $166.50, not far from where it was even before news of the SEC suit broke. Goldman isn’t dead – far from it. But this new … [Read more...] about The Feds vs. Goldman

Pete Townshend Talks Mods, Recording, and Smashing Guitars

· September 14, 1968 ·

The Who are the best known and most brilliant expression of the most influential “youth movement” ever to take Great Britain, the Mods. Their career began in Shepherd’s Bush, a lower-class suburb of London, and took them through such places as Brighton-by-the-sea, scene of the great Mod-Rocker battles several years ago. Their first recording was “My Generation.” Peter Townshend is the well-known guitarist in the group, but he is also the group’s main driving force, the author of most of the material, the composer of most of the music and the impetus behind the Who’s stylistic stance. It was he, for example, who is credited with initiating the Union Jack style in clothes, something he did by draping Keith Moon in them. The Who’s generation has gotten older and the change is seen in their records: “The Kids Are Alright” to “Happy Jack;” and from “Happy Jack” to girls and boys with perspiration, pimple and … [Read more...] about Pete Townshend Talks Mods, Recording, and Smashing Guitars

The Religious Right’s Come-to-Jesus About Trump

· May 10, 2016 ·

Very early Monday morning, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump , as is his custom, delivered an insult-by-tweet — one that would have been a heresy in politics as we knew it pre-Trump. But in our Trumpian world, it was just another data point in his long march to bring down the Republican Party — and the religious right. Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and a frequent Trump critic, had penned an op-ed in the New York Times Friday, arguing Trump’s campaign “is forcing American Christians to grapple with some scary realities that will have implications for years to come.” Apparently in reaction to Moore’s piece, which asserted that evangelicals reject racism and nativism, Trump tweeted that Moore “is truly a terrible representative of Evangelicals and all of the good they stand for. A nasty guy with no heart!” This wouldn’t be the first time, of course, that Trump had used social media to insult … [Read more...] about The Religious Right’s Come-to-Jesus About Trump
