Asked to direct Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation —following his work on two prior installments of the franchise—the biggest obstacle Genndy Tartakovsky faced was that he didn’t want to make the film in the first place. Seeing installments one and two snowball to major commercial success, the director was nonetheless loathe to repeat himself, continuing the story of Dracula—played by Adam Sandler—and the castle to which he is bound. Breaking out in television, through the creation of hit Cartoon Network series including Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack , Tartakovsky was used to the creative control that came with this arena, which presented an altogether different creative experience, still informing his work to this day. When he was approached by Sony Pictures Animation to make his feature debut with the original Hotel Transylvania , Tartakovsky couldn’t have anticipated the internal conflict that would result. Seeing major results at the helm of studio … [Read more...] about ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ Helmer Genndy Tartakovsky Confronts Studio Notes, Striving To Break Out With Original Works

A songwriter is suing the YouTube comedy duo Handsome Dancer , claiming they haven’t properly credited, or paid him, for his contributions to their viral song, “Coincidance.” The lawsuit was filed by Giacomo Lamparelli, who’s seeking damages for unpaid royalties related to the song, according to the court documents obtained by Rolling Stone . Lamparelli claims he provided significant contributions to the original demo made by Handsome Dancer’s James Manzello and Matt Pavich, but in the wake of the song’s success, the pair “have ceased providing Mr. Lamparelli credit for his work, refused to recognize him as a co-author, refused to provide an accounting and refused to pay any compensation for Mr. Lamparelli’s production services or his work” on the track. Handsome Dancer did not immediately return Rolling Stone ’s request for comment. “Coincidence” was first released in 2015 and steadily became a viral success over the years. As noted in Lamparelli’s lawsuit, the song … [Read more...] about Creators of Viral ‘Coincidance’ Song Sued for Allegedly Snubbing Collaborator on Credit, Royalties
Toronto Review: Dionne Warwick Documentary ‘Don’t Make Me Over’
Dionne Warwick : Don’t Make Me Over is an apt title for a documentary by David Heilbroner and Dave Wooley on the life of iconic singer and legend Dionne Warwick. She stands out from the other singing divas because her catalog is the most diverse. With her cross-genre appeal, her music touched all people, everywhere. Gen Z knows Warwick based on her social media persona (as she’s called “Auntie Dionne” on Twitter), so this film couldn’t have come at a better time, as a new generation of youngsters will learn why she is iconic in every way. The film is at its most authentic when Warwick gets to tell her story in her own words–and she is having a blast doing so. The documentary begins with a sweeping shot of the landmark Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY. They intend to honor Warwick with a plaque on the Apollo Star Walk of Fame. The scene is cut with intermittent clips of admirers and friends of the legendary singer, including Gladys Knight, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Elton John … [Read more...] about Toronto Review: Dionne Warwick Documentary ‘Don’t Make Me Over’

SCOTUS Buffer Zone Covers Group Fighting Buffer Zones at Abortion Clinics
Soon after the draft of its decision stripping abortion rights got leaked, the Supreme Court resembled a fortress. The courthouse was ringed with eight-foot fencing and public streets and walkways near the grounds were closed to the public. There was thick irony in the fact that the high court justices had created a “buffer zone” to limit pro-abortion demonstrators from getting up-close-and-personal. The court has spent decades declaring broad buffer zones around abortion clinics unconstitutional, forcing patients to run an intimidating (and often abusive) gauntlet of anti-abortion protesters. This irony runs deeper still. The anti-abortion group Liberty Counsel jumpstarted the war on clinic buffer zones with a 1994 Supreme Court case, and continues to battle such restrictions as an intolerable infringement on First Amendment rights. The group has an outpost in Washington, D.C., but Americans cannot protest there either — because the Supreme Court buffer zone actually … [Read more...] about SCOTUS Buffer Zone Covers Group Fighting Buffer Zones at Abortion Clinics
