Trevor Noah and The Daily Show crew usually are up for a few laughs on the serious topics they tackle. But tonight, it was more about rueful laughter, as they discussed the Washington Post’s blockbuster story that showed three different presidential administrations lied about American progress in the war in Afghanistan. “It’s the Grey’s Anatomy of wars,” said Noah. “We thought it ended years ago, but somehow, it’s still going strong.” He went on to detail that for 18 years, US officials lied about the Afghanistan war, painting a rosy picture that everything is well – a tactic used by every failing couple on Instagram, he noted. The government lied about every detail of the war, even spinning suicide bombers as a sign of success. That, Noah noted, is like touting yourself as a catch in online dating because you have your own room in mom’s basement. Disney-Sony Standoff Ends Marvel Studios & Kevin Feige’s Involvement In ‘Spider-Man’
UPDATED at 8:55p.m. PT with Sony response: Sony Pictures spent much of yesterday putting its perspective on the prospective loss of Kevin Feige from future Spider-Man films. First the studio downplayed the idea he might be leaving; then insiders pinned his exit on added responsibilities from the Fox acquisition of the X-Men franchise, though they declined to make a statement. Sony declined to meet those terms or even counter with anything worth considering. It was an aggressive stance by Disney, which already owns the merchandise on Spider-Man, and a tough nut for Sony to … [Read more...] about Disney-Sony Standoff Ends Marvel Studios & Kevin Feige’s Involvement In ‘Spider-Man’
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Director Jon M. Chu Responds To Co-Writer Pay Disparity Dilemma: “I Stand With Adele!”
Close to a week after the news broke about Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim leaving the sequels due to a huge pay disparity between her and co-writer Peter Chiarelli, director Jon M. Chu responded to the situation Monday championing Lim on Twitter, and explaining the challenging intricacies of deal-making. THR, which broke the story last week, reported that starting offers were $800,000- $1 million for Chiarelli and $110K-plus for Lim, the business argument being that he was a seasoned feature scribe, and Lim largely a TV writer (Crazy Rich Asians was her first feature film). The sequels to the $238.5 million-grossing hit last summer — China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, both also based on Kevin Kwan’s books — are expected to shoot back-to-back.
