My parents were getting old. They wanted to come back to India. They didn't want to live there and so it was a big decision for me. Also, I think it's great that I came here because my kids got to see how people live because where they are in the USA, they are in their own bubble." The Art World’s ‘Mini Madoff’ Faces Sentencing for His $86 Million Fraud
Before Inigo Philbrick became known as the art world’s “ mini-Madoff ,” he cultivated a reputation as a wunderkind gallerist. A bon vivant with boyish good looks and even better connections, Philbrick opened two of his own art galleries by his early 30s. Philbrick had enjoyed the backing of a top gallerist and the trust of seasoned collectors. He boasted a comely girlfriend and had ingratiated himself with her family. Philbrick, as it would turn out, was a scammer. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 18, 2021 to one count of wire fraud. At the time, the then 34-year-old Philbrick admitted in court that between 2016 and 2019, he “knowingly engaged” in a scheme to rake in cash using “material representations and omissions” in his business deals, including shady tactics like peddling more shares in an artwork than actually existed. He will be sentenced Monday afternoon for the $86 million fraud. Papers submitted in advance of his sentencing paint a comprehensive, and complicated, … [Read more...] about The Art World’s ‘Mini Madoff’ Faces Sentencing for His $86 Million Fraud

A stacked career, a rise and fall, and rockstar love story. Austin Butler’s portrayal of the the King of Rock & Roll in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is coming to theaters in just a month, and Warner Brothers just released its second official trailer . The trailer opens with a contextualization from a voiceover — “Our country itself is sick, and it’s lost its sense of direction – even its common decency” — about the reaction to Presley and his dance moves. Butler as Presley is then seen wiggling his pinky as the camera pans to Tom Hanks’ character Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager. “In that moment Elvis the man was sacrificed and Elvis the God was born.” The trailer then — backed by “ (If You’re Looking For) Trouble” — laces clips of Presley performing before a scene sees the King of Rock & Roll being taken away in a police car. Is Monkeypox Just the Beginning?
A fresh outbreak of monkeypox in Europe and the United States in recent weeks isn’t just a threat to public health. It’s also a warning sign. More and more dangerous viruses, having evolved in animal populations, are jumping to the human population. Bird flu. MERS. SARS-CoV-1. And of course SARS-CoV-2, which has killed 6.3 million people since the very first infection in Wuhan, China, 30 months ago. It’s not hard to see why these animal-to-human “zoonotic” viral outbreaks are getting more severe and more frequent. We’re chopping down more of the forests where animals live, exposing them to us and us to them. Climate change and the illicit wildlife trade only make the problem worse. As deforestation surges, so does the risk of viral outbreaks. “The combination of climate change, population density and urban expansion is worrisome because I think we will continue to see novel viruses with the capacity to cause human disease,” said Stephanie James, the head of … [Read more...] about Is Monkeypox Just the Beginning?
