Joe Biden To Hold Full Press Conference By The End Of The Month, Press Secretary Jen Psaki Says

· March 5, 2021 ·

Joe Biden plans to hold a full press conference by the end of the month, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters in response to questions of why he hasn’t held such an event yet. “We look forward to holding a full press conference in the coming weeks, before the end of the month, and we are working on setting a final date for that, and as soon as we do, we will let you all know,” Psaki told reporters at the press briefing on Friday. One reporter pointed out that at this point in past administrations going back to Ronald Reagan, the new presidents had already held press conferences, which typically have been held in the East Room of the White House. Psaki noted that even though Biden has not held a full press conference yet, he still “takes questions several times a week. He took questions twice yesterday, which is an opportunity for whoever is overing the White House to ask him about what is happening in the news on any given day.” Related Story … [Read more...] about Joe Biden To Hold Full Press Conference By The End Of The Month, Press Secretary Jen Psaki Says

Tim Wu, A Proponent Of Breaking Up Tech Giants, Joins Joe Biden’s White House National Economic Council

· March 5, 2021 ·

Tim Wu , a professor and lawyer known for coining the term “ net neutrality ” and for writing authoritative media books like The Master Switch , has been named to a White House post. He will serve on President Joe Biden ’s National Economic Council, leaving his post at Columbia University to become special assistant to the president for technology and competition policy. The position will not give him the authority other administration officials have in terms of antitrust matters and related issues but it will offer a larger, formal platform for positions he has taken over the years. There has been bipartisan support in recent years for bringing down the regulatory hammer on big tech . Federal lawsuits pending against Facebook and Google are expected to gear up under Biden. Even the executives leading the companies have recognized publicly that regulation should play a more prominent role in shaping the companies. Biden’s exact plan for how to do that is not yet fully … [Read more...] about Tim Wu, A Proponent Of Breaking Up Tech Giants, Joins Joe Biden’s White House National Economic Council

Senate Democrats Reach Deal On Unemployment Benefits To Move Covid-19 Relief Bill Forward

· March 5, 2021 ·

Senate Democrats reached a deal to end an impasse over the Covid-19 relief bill, after coming to an agreement with moderate Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. VA) on the size of the legislation’s outlay for unemployment benefits. The bill now will provide an extra $300 per week of jobless benefits that extends through Sept. 6. Those making less than $150,000 will get a tax break on the first $10,200 of their benefits. The House version of the bill, which passed last week, provided an extra $400 per week of the jobless benefits. The $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief legislation stalled out on Friday morning, as Democrats worked through the day to reach some kind of agreement with Manchin that would trim the size of the unemployment benefit. Janelle Monáe On Writing “Turntables”, Supporting Stacey Abrams & Creating “More Stories Of Black Joy”

· March 5, 2021 ·

Got a new agenda, With a new dream, I’m kicking out the old regime, Liberation, elevation, education. The lyrics of Janelle Monáe’s Oscar shortlisted song, “Turntables” are a call for accountability flavored with positive promise. Written for the Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés-directed documentary about Georgia political activist Stacey Abrams, All In: The Fight for Democracy , Monáe’s song aligns in every sense with Abrams’ single-minded refusal to tolerate insidious, endemic and overwhelming voter suppression following her 2018 run for governor of Georgia. Rapping about a “new dream”, Monáe speaks to the long-sought turning of a societal and political tide in this country. The call came early on in the pandemic. As an Abrams fan and a Georgia voter herself, Monáe had previously offered to help Abrams in any way she could. But when the documentary team approached, Monáe was, she says, “not in a healthy space mentally”. Not only were her tour dates disappearing and … [Read more...] about Janelle Monáe On Writing “Turntables”, Supporting Stacey Abrams & Creating “More Stories Of Black Joy”
