· March 3, 2021 ·

Fans of Dr. Seuss are snapping up his children’s books , a day after the author’s estate announced that it would discontinue publication of six titles that contained racist and insensitive imagery. As of Wednesday afternoon, all six books included in the announcement were sold out on sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble , with resellers listing the discontinued titles for up to $500 on eBay . From the Ocean to Outer Space: The Adventures of Dr. Kathy Sullivan

· March 3, 2021 ·

In 1976, Kathy Sullivan was finishing up her Ph.D. in oceanography when an intriguing, if somewhat far-fetched, opportunity presented itself: the chance to become an astronaut. Her expertise was in the geology of the deep-sea floor, a few hundred miles in the exact opposite direction of where a space flight would take her, and joining NASA , she realized, could shut the door forever on her career in oceanography. “I loved the expeditionary part of oceanography best of all,” she says, “being out at sea, adapting to what odd circumstances came your way, bad weather or broken equipment. I adored that.” But on a visit home during Christmas break, her brother told her that NASA was recruiting astronauts for its new space-shuttle program. It seemed at first to have nothing to do with the path she was on, but once she read up on it, she realized NASA was looking for people to do in space what she loved doing at sea — planning and executing scientific expeditions. She applied and beat out … [Read more...] about From the Ocean to Outer Space: The Adventures of Dr. Kathy Sullivan

Universal Orlando ‘Evaluating’ Seuss Landing Attraction After Publication Ceased On Six Books For Racial Insensitivity

· March 3, 2021 ·

Universal is mulling what — if anything — to do about the Seuss Landing kids’ space at its Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando after six Dr. Seuss books will no longer be published due to offensive depictions of racial caricatures. The attraction has areas named after a few of the offending titles. Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced this week that six titles — including And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo and McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super! and The Cat’s Quizzer — will no longer be published due to what the organization concedes are “hurtful and wrong” character portrayals. The books date from the 1930s to 1950s and have been criticized in recent years for racist caricatures of Black, Asian and Middle Eastern characters. A play area at Seuss Landing is based on If I Ran the Zoo and there’s a gift shop called Mulberry Street Store and a Mulberry Street sign. “Seuss Landing continues to be very … [Read more...] about Universal Orlando ‘Evaluating’ Seuss Landing Attraction After Publication Ceased On Six Books For Racial Insensitivity
