Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison ’s feature directorial debut Flint Strong has moved from Universal to MGM , with Brian Tyree Henry ( Atlanta ) coming aboard to star, Deadline can confirm. Henry joins an ensemble that also includes Ryan Destiny and Oluniké Adeliyi, as previously announced. The film will continue shooting next week in Toronto following a prolonged shutdown precipitated by the Covid pandemic. Henry takes over the role initially to have been played by Ice Cube, who worked on the project for just two days back in March of 2020, before production was indefinitely delayed. Flint Strong is a boxing drama based on Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper’s 2015 documentary, T-Rex . It will tell the true story of Claressa “T-REX” Shields (Destiny), a 17-year-old Flint, Michigan native whose dreams of becoming the first woman in history to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing came to fruition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The Sports Emmys held its first in-person ceremony since 2019 on Tuesday night, and NFL Live and ESPN went home with the most wins by program and network, respectively. After tying for the lead last year , the NFL Network program snapped up four trophies to top NBC Sports’ Beijing Winter Olympics coverage (three). ESPN’s NHL on ESPN, which was revived last year after the network regained TV rights to the National Hockey League, and CBS Sports’ The NFL Today were the only other shows to score multiple statuettes. ESPN’s E60 won again for Outstanding Journalism for its 19th Sports Emmy since 2010. CBS and NFL Network tied for the runner-up slot among networks with six Sports Emmys apiece, followed by NBC (five), TNT (four) and Fox (three). Apple TV + is prepping Speed Racer , a high-profile live-action series from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television where the company is under a deal. Details are sketchy but I hear the project, written by Hiram Martinez ( Snowpiercer) and Ron Fitzgerald (Westworld ), is going back to the original source material and is a live-action take on the classic 1960s manga series. 2022 Apple TV+ Pilots & Series Orders I hear the series is now staffing a writers room, with Martinez and Fitzgerald as executive producers/co-showrunners. Speed Racer , a Japanese media franchise about automobile racing, first launched as a manga series titled Mach GoGoGo by Tatsuo Yoshida in 1966. The NFL has reportedly decided to bring mobile streaming in-house, creating an owned-and-operated service called NFL+ to provide in-market live streams of games on mobile devices. Sports Business Journal reported that league owners signed off on the NFL+ plan during their meetings in Atlanta, following media speculation earlier this year about the scenario. The price point is said to be $5 a month, though the report noted that pricing could change. Given the blossoming of podcasting as a medium, the offering will likely include podcasts along with other team content and radio streams. Under current broadcast regulations, regular season games must be offered within teams’ local markets on TV networks available without a pay-TV subscription.
