The Toronto Film Festival ushered in the fall awards season Sunday evening with the first in-person edition of its Tribute Awards in three years at the city’s historic Fairmount Royal York Hotel. “More than any other year this festival might be the most special for me, not because it’s TIFF’s 47th edition, not because we’re screening more than 200 films from across the globe, but because we get to welcome the whole film world back to Toronto,” festival CEO Cameron Bailey proclaimed as he kicked off the evening. ‘Saint Omer’ Takes Top Honors At 34th Palm Springs Film Festival
Legal docudrama Saint Omer was voted Best Picture at the 34 th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced this year’s juried award winners today. Saint Omer wins for its ability “to expertly interrogate issues of society, culture, race, and gender,” the festival release stated. “Alice Diop, as screenwriter and director, delivers a film that explores different dynamics of Black women in contemporary France, drawing empathetic lead performances from Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga (whose characters never interact, save for one momentous glance). EXCLUSIVE: Fifth Season ’s COO Tim Robinson has left the Severance producer after four years. Robinson, a former Shine Group and Avalon boss, joined Fifth Season in 2018. The Brit has been working out of its LA base but exited recently. Robinson is well respected and much liked at Fifth Season, which was formerly known as Endeavor Content. He played a key role in the company’s sale to South Korean powerhouse CJ ENM last year and the subsequent rebrand to its new identity. CJ ENM bought 80% of Fifth Season for $785M, with Endeavor retaining the other 20%. The departure is understood to be amicable and Robinson is believed to be exploring new opportunities. The Sundance Institute Science-in-Film initiative with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation named Sophie Barthes’ The Pod Generation as this year’s Feature Film Prize winner. In addition three artists grants went to recipients for three projects in development. The prizes were handed out at a reception following the Appetite for Construction panel at Filmmaker Lodge. StudioCanal Returns To UK Production Investment By Backing ‘Vigil’ Director
EXCLUSIVE : StudioCanal is returning to the UK television production investment scene as it finalizes a deal with an outfit co-founded by a Vigil and Downton Abbey director. The French production group will back Strong Film & Television, which was co-founded by BAFTA-winner James Strong and Matt Tombs, a former BBC and Paramount executive. Strong Film & Television was established in late 2020 and appears to have added Loretta Preece to its ranks. Preece was most recently the series producer on Casualty , the long-running, BAFTA-winning BBC continuing drama. StudioCanal is close to finalizing an announcement for the investment, which would mark one of its first notable television deals in the UK for years. Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market Unveils 2023 Lineup
The Göteborg Film Festival has unveiled the 53 Nordic Films that will take part in the latest edition of the Nordic Film Market , running February 2 – 5. Scroll down for the list. The line-up consists of 17 completed feature films, 15 works in progress, 11 films in development presented at the market’s co-financing platform Discovery, and another 10 features in development from up-and-coming Swedish creators at Talent to Watch. The 2023 edition of Nordic Film Market will comprise a full on-site event in Göteborg alongside digital screenings on the festival’s dedicated industry platform. This year the festival has said close to 500 invited buyers, distributors, sales agents, producers, festival programmers, and other key industry delegates from 32 countries are expected to attend. Richard E. Grant To Host 2023 BAFTA Film Awards
Actor Richard E. Grant has been set as the host of the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, which take place on February 19 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London. Grant takes over the reins from Rebel Wilson, who hosted last year’s edition, the first in-person ceremony since the pandemic. The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK. This year’s nominations will be unveiled on January 19. The longlists were published earlier this month . British presenter Alison Hammond has been announced as the host of the BAFTA studio, a new behind-the-scenes stream launched for this year’s ceremony.
