‘Saint Omer’ Takes Top Honors At 34th Palm Springs Film Festival

January 15, 2023 by deadline.com

Legal docudrama Saint Omer was voted Best Picture at the 34 th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced this year’s juried award winners today. Saint Omer wins for its ability “to expertly interrogate issues of society, culture, race, and gender,” the festival release stated. “Alice Diop, as screenwriter and director, delivers a film that explores different dynamics of Black women in contemporary France, drawing empathetic lead performances from Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga (whose characters never interact, save for one momentous glance). By harnessing the skills of her technical team, Diop turns Saint Omer into a shrewd, cogent, ambitious, and overwhelming film which teases a metafictional awareness while remaining clear-eyed and unsentimental.” The Palm Springs festival took place from January 5-16 and screened 134 films from 64 countries, including 27 premieres. The lineup includes 35 of the International Feature Film Oscar … [Read more...] about ‘Saint Omer’ Takes Top Honors At 34th Palm Springs Film Festival

‘Tár’ Star Cate Blanchett Wants A New Way To Celebrate “Arbitrary” Awards Season During Critics Choice Awards After Best Actress Win

January 15, 2023 by deadline.com

Cate Blanchett won at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, where she took the Best Actress trophy for her role in Tár . In the film, Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a fiercely independent and world-renowned composer whose esteemed career comes crashing down around her after being accused of sexual harassment. Following her recent win for Best Actress in a Drama at the Golden Globes on Tuesday , which Blanchett did not attend, Blanchett candidly spoke out about the triviality of awards season in a rousing speech. “It’s extremely arbitrary considering how many extraordinary performances that have been by women not only in this room but, you know… the extraordinary creative conversation. I can’t believe I’m up here. This is ridiculous. I am so old,” Blanchett laughed before she continued. “Why don’t we just say there is a whole raft of female performances that are in concert and in dialogue with one another? And stop the televised horse race of it all. Can I tell you, every single … [Read more...] about ‘Tár’ Star Cate Blanchett Wants A New Way To Celebrate “Arbitrary” Awards Season During Critics Choice Awards After Best Actress Win

Hasbro’s eOne U-Turn: Behind Toymaker’s Decision To Sell Indie Film & TV Studio And What’s Next For IP Slate

November 18, 2022 by deadline.com

After more than a year and a half of development, eOne recently started shopping its high-profile Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV series. Shepherded by Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, it is based on Hasbro ’s wildly popular fantasy role-playing game franchise. The series was conceived as eOne’s priciest, largest-scope TV project ever, a series that would demonstrate the full potential of Hasbro’s 2019 acquisition of the indie film and TV studio. It started garnering bids and all seemed to be going smoothly — until the process was interrupted Thursday by the toymaker’s announcement that it plans to sell eOne’s film and TV businesses. While Hasbro has been preparing for a potential sale of most of eOne’s assets for quite a while, working with JPMorgan and Centerview Partners, the timing of the announcement is raising eyebrows. M&A activity has become complicated by economic conditions of late, with rising interest rates frustrating some … [Read more...] about Hasbro’s eOne U-Turn: Behind Toymaker’s Decision To Sell Indie Film & TV Studio And What’s Next For IP Slate
