EXCLUSIVE: Some of the West End and Broadway’s biggest productions are making their debuts on Indian TV. Zee Theatre has secured agreements to bring The Sound of Music Live! , Hairspray Live! , Peter Pan Live! and Billy Elliot: The Musical to Indian pay-TV channel Tata Play Theatre. The Sound of Music Live! will kick off a month of broadcasts on May 29, with the stage adaptations following  over coming weeks. To this point, none of the musicals have aired on Indian TV screens. EXCLUSIVE : A Cannes Market teeming with strong film packages adds a new one. I’m hearing that buyers will today be getting The Hood , a script by Paul Greengrass that he will direct, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring. The period drama is about the peasant revolt in England, I’m told. Cumberbatch will play a farmer who become the leader in an action drama that is best likened to Braveheart , and Gladiator . Greengrass last directed the Tom Hanks-starrer News of the World , and Cumberbatch is coming off his Best Actor-nominated performance in Power of the Dog . CAA Media Finance and FilmNation are selling this one. Tyler Thompson’s Cross Creek is financing and producing. Thompson and Greggory Goodman are producing. Cross Creek is also producing Melody , the Jeremy Zag-directed animated musical that will star Katy Perry and is being sold here in the Cannes Market . EXCLUSIVE : Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo ( Harriet ) will lead cast alongside Being The Ricardos and Arrested Development star Alia Shawkat in Anthony Chen’s ( Ilo Ilo ) English-language debut Drift . The film reunites Call Me By Your Name producers Emilie Georges and Peter Spears and exec producer Naima Abed. Spears won the Best Picture Oscar last year for Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland . Drift follows a young Liberian refugee named Jacqueline (Erivo) who has barely escaped her war-torn country to a Greek island. She offers massages to tourists in exchange for one or two euros to battle her hunger, while her daily struggle for survival keeps the memories that haunt her at bay. She meets an unmoored tour guide (Shawkat) and the two become close as they each find hope in the other. Mark Jenkin ’s 2019 film Bait had the rare distinction of being a genuine out-of-the-blue discovery, featuring heavily on UK critics’ year-best lists after a modest arthouse release by the BFI. The black-and-white film’s experimental style was emphasized in all its press coverage, nodding to avant-garde auteurs like Stan Brakhage, Derek Jarman and Guy Maddin — all directors who are interested in the literal grain of film and video (indeed, Jenkin reportedly developed the negative with coffee and washing soda then distressed the image by hand). Throw in post-synch sound, and you have a film more likely to screen to two people and a dog at a smoky underground 1960s cine-club than win a BAFTA. W hen Steven Soderbergh began work on The Knick – his gritty, historical medical series for Cinemax, set in New York City in 1900 – he enjoyed replicating the era’s look, fashion and stomach-churning surgical practices. But one of the few things that was far too ghastly to replicate was the music. “Oh, it was horrible,” he says with a laugh. “Aesthetically, it’s a really cool period, but the music was absolutely boring and not interesting. Ragtime had just started – and there’s a tiny bit of that in the background of some scenes – but other than that, there was nothing good.” So the director turned to the only person he thought could give The Knick a unique sound: his frequent collaborator, Cliff Martinez. One particularly happy result is the pairing of George Clinton with the Red Hot Chili Peppers . Having dallied with Thomas Dolby on his own new album, the P-Funk overlord furthers his far-reaching stylistic influence by schooling the Los Angeles quartet in the ways of the venerable funkmaster. A fairly outrageous bunch to begin with, the Chili Peppers raise their buttshaking dementia to new heights of prurient rhythmic frenzy under their producer’s sage if zany guidance. Freaky Styley , the Peppers’ first full-length album, is wilder, rougher, funnier and funkier than their self-titled EP, which was no semiotics colloquium itself. Ice Cream for Crow , Captain Beefheart ’s twelfth album, will surely attain the sacred status enjoyed by the rest of this beloved eccentric’s musical canon, and it will do so without so much as a critical blink. So it should be: in the arid expanses of rock & roll, Beefheart’s fecund gift for words and music stands out like a flower rising from parched earth. Personally, I have nothing but gratitude for almost every note he’s ever played, but a few observations about his new record may be in order. First, in addition to the whooping crane and the manatee, Captain Beefheart’s voice should be added to the list of endangered species. These days, he’s not so much singing as delivering raspy recitations, and his touted seven-and-a-half octave range — a sad casualty of cigarettes and age? — is nowhere in evidence. Stand Unshaken” quietly appeared on YouTube recently.
