With Pink Skies Ahead and Holler , Jessica Barden explored two very different perspectives on what it’s like to come of age in America. Written and directed by Kelly Oxford, the former dramedy centers on Winona, a young writer struggling with an anxiety disorder that drops out of school, and is left to figure out how to move forward in her life. Holler , from writer-director Nicole Riegel, follows Ruth, a young woman who joins a dangerous and illegal scrap metal crew with her brother, to pay for her education, so that she can one day get out of her small, working-class Ohio town. While the indies (from MTV Studios and IFC Films, respectively) are dissimilar on the surface, in terms of tone and subject matter, they actually have more in common than is immediately apparent. After six exciting weeks, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has wrapped up its run. Like most things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it wrapped up its narrative while leaving many threads dangling for future projects. One character of particular interest following the finale is Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter. Even before a jury has been selected, the first day of Harvey Weinstein ’s criminal trial for rape saw legal and cultural explosions going off inside and outside a Manhattan courtroom this morning. After an impassioned argument by Deputy District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon , a gag of sorts on Weinstein and his team talking to the media sought by prosecutors was denied by Justice James Burke with a stern warning to “leave the witnesses alone” outside the court. “Enough harm has been done to many of these witnesses already,” Illuzzi-Orbon said in reference to the allegations of sexual assault and sexual harassment by the once-powerful producer and the numerous recent media appearances by lead defense lawyer Donna Rotunno and even interviews given by Weinstein himself. Imax ’s first-quarter results met Wall Street analysts’ expectations and showed signs of the movie industry’s rebound from the depths of Covid-19 a year ago. Net losses per share narrowed to 25 cents in the quarter, from 82 cents a year ago, better than analysts’ consensus for 26 cents. Total revenue rose 11% to $38.8 million, a hair lower than the Street’s forecast for $39 million. Box office receipts in Imax venues showed their first year-to-year quarterly increase since the start of the pandemic, reaching $110 million globally. In the year-earlier period, which was when theaters shut down in the U.S., Europe and other regions, box office was $95.2 million. While Imax doesn’t keep all of the box office, of course, the metric is a good way to gauge how fast turnstiles are spinning.
