Steven Soderbergh on the Gore, the Grind, and the Glory of Making ‘The Knick’

· February 25, 2021 ·

Steven Soderbergh has directed award-winning films like Traffic and Sex, Lies, and Videotape , as well as crowd-pleasers like Out of Sight and Ocean’s Eleven. He’s gone back in time with The Good German , and looked unnervingly prescient with Contagion . No job in his long and distinguished career, though, may have brought him more fulfillment than the 20 episodes of television he directed over two seasons of The Knick , the period medical drama that aired on Cinemax from 2014 to 2015 and has just come to HBO Max . “My wife has told me many times,” Soderbergh says, “‘That’s as happy as I’ve ever seen you working on anything.'” Set at a fictionalized version of Manhattan’s famed Knickerbocker Hospital at the turn of the 20th century, The Knick was created by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, and starred Clive Owen as chief surgeon John “Thack” Thackeray, who used cocaine as an anesthetic on his patients, then got hooked on the drug himself. André Holland co-stars … [Read more...] about Steven Soderbergh on the Gore, the Grind, and the Glory of Making ‘The Knick’

‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ Review: Fan Service Firing on All Cylinders

· October 11, 2019 ·

(This review contains no real spoilers for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie . A more detailed and spoiler-filled take on the film is coming tomorrow morning at 9.) Writing the adventures of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman required at least as much improvisation as the criminal escapades themselves entailed. Neither the drug dealers nor their storytellers were particularly good at sticking to plans. Much of what made Breaking Bad one of TV’s greatest series ever was how both the show and its main characters backed themselves into corners, then found a way out — usually involving a very big explosion. The most important deviation from the blueprint came very early. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan had assumed that Jesse would introduce Walt to the drug world, then get killed. Instead, Aaron Paul proved so utterly compelling in the role that Jesse not only survived, but in time was treated as Walt’s narrative equal. When the series ended, Walt was lying dead on a meth lab … [Read more...] about ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ Review: Fan Service Firing on All Cylinders

Spoon Unearth ‘Lines in the Suit’ Demo for ‘Girls Can Tell’ Anniversary

· February 25, 2021 ·

Spoon have unearthed their 1999 demo for “Lines in the Suit,” a track off 2001’s Girls Can Tell , to mark the 20th anniversary of the Austin band’s third studio album. Unlike its polished album version, the home demo for “Lines in the Suit – 30 Minutes Old” finds the track in its embryonic form; as suggested by its title, the track was recorded just half an hour after Britt Daniel conceived of the song, giving the demo an unsteady feel. “ Girls Can Tell was the Hail Mary pass that absolutely no one thought was gonna find a receiver. It was the record where the colors changed, trains collided, and suddenly we sounded a lot more like us than we’d ever sounded before,” Daniel said of the album in a statement. “The big idea behind Girls Can Tell was to take stock of the band’s MO from inception until that point, to carefully consider all the things we’d been trying to do and the way we’d been doing them, and then set out to specifically avoid all of that. To instead come up with … [Read more...] about Spoon Unearth ‘Lines in the Suit’ Demo for ‘Girls Can Tell’ Anniversary
