What’s up with you and music? You’ve made documentaries on the blues, the Band , Bob Dylan and soon Bob Marley . Now you’ve caught the Rolling Stones onstage in Shine a Light . Isn’t singing in the shower enough for you? laughs ]. I wish I could create music, but I can’t. What I can do is put images and music together. What’s the first memory you have of hearing the Rolling Stones ? Keith Richards and “Satisfaction.” And the impression of Mick Jagger ‘s voice, then the lyrics and the driving, relentless nature of the song. It’s like a motor. I had to go back and find their other music. What about the Stones stuck with you? Let It Bleed , each song is like a narrative, and the band together is like a single character in these narratives. Jagger’s voice sounds like a musical instrument. In my head, I’d imagine camera moves or editing patterns, and it freed my mind creatively. A lot of that relentless energy went into Mean Streets , into Taxi Driver … [Read more...] about Martin Scorsese on Rolling Stones Doc ‘Shine a Light’: It’s All About the Music

Pete Townshend on Mick Jagger and the Nature of Aging in Rock & Roll
M ick Jagger , Singer of the Rolling Stones , turned forty years old on July 26th. Apart from the fact that forty is a nice, round number, it also signifies the twentieth year of the Stones’ career. Looking for a maxim suitable to open an article in which I would try hard to find some reason why these events should be of interest, I came across a Proverb (22:6) in the May issue of Awake: “Train a boy according to the way for him; even when he grows old he will not turn aside from it.” The Times is an appropriate place for me to be airing my thoughts on this moment in rock history. On June 30th, 1967, my group, the Who , took an advertisement in the Evening Standard to protest against the savage sentences meted out to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for possession of drugs. We really thought we were going out on a limb, attracting the attention of the police and the press and probably opening ourselves up for similar busts. On the following day, however, the Times … [Read more...] about Pete Townshend on Mick Jagger and the Nature of Aging in Rock & Roll
Cannes Film Festival Has Had Its Musical Moments From The Stones To The Spice Girls
In 1971, the Cannes Film Festival opened with a screening of Gimme Shelter by Albert and David Maysles, an immersive, vérité depiction of two weeks in the touring life of the Rolling Stones . If that was all it did, it might have been forgotten by now. But by a terrible freak of chance, the filmmakers followed the band to the most notorious concert of their entire career — the Altamont Speedway Free Festival in Livermore, CA, where the Stones, along with Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, were set to perform a free concert for 300,000 people on Dec. 6, 1969. “We didn’t know what it was going to be,” Albert said later. “We just had a childish faith that having seen the Stones and getting along with them, there might be a feature film there.” At the apparent suggestion of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead (who were originally set to perform at the festival but ended up steering clear due to serious … [Read more...] about Cannes Film Festival Has Had Its Musical Moments From The Stones To The Spice Girls

Interpol Conjure Up a ‘Summer Jam’ With New Song ‘Fables’
Ahead of the release of Interpol ’s new album The Other Side of Make-Believe , the indie rock trio have shared “Fables,” the latest single from the LP. “It’s a summer jam and a piece of music we are particularly proud of,” frontman Paul Banks said of the track in a statement. “‘Fables’ features one of [guitarist Daniel Kessler]’s hottest licks,” comments Banks. “A breezy vocal with optimistic lyrics and a bouncy drum beat evocative of classic R&B with a nod to the golden age of hip-hop.” Interpol previously shared “ Toni ” from The Other Side of Make-Believe , due out July 15 via Matador. Written during the pandemic and recorded last year, Banks told Rolling Stone that some The Other Side of Make-Believe songs are “unabashedly positive sentiments” despite the circumstances. He added that “it definitely feels like us,” and “it’s the heart and soul of our band — like, there’s a DNA to our sound. Another part of me thinks, ‘This might be super fucking … [Read more...] about Interpol Conjure Up a ‘Summer Jam’ With New Song ‘Fables’
Kim Gordon Seethes Against a Looming Housing Crisis on New Song ‘Debt Collector’
Kim Gordon has linked up with Bikini Kill ’s Erica Dawn Lyle and musician/filmmaker Vice Cooler for a scathing rebuke of a growing crisis in land and real estate, “Debt Collector.” The track will appear on Lyle and Cooler’s upcoming album, Land Trust: Benefit for North East Farmers of Color , out June 3. “Debt Collector,” with its crashing drums and gnarled, industrial synths, packs a brutal instrumental punch that pairs perfectly with Gordon’s quintessential disaffected vocal delivery. “You’re not welcome/To the gated community,” Gordon says, “We bought the block/But you gotta have cash/If you want one/You gotta bring your soul/You gotta pay the down the money.” In a statement, Gordon explained that her lyrics were inspired by the “financialization” of housing , whereby large companies and investment firms scoop up massive shares of real estate to trade it as a speculative asset while ignoring the needs of tenants. “I’m a bit obsessed with what’s happening with these … [Read more...] about Kim Gordon Seethes Against a Looming Housing Crisis on New Song ‘Debt Collector’
Why Kendrick Lamar’s New Album Is His Most Controversial Work
Kendrick Lamar takes aim at his own image and delves into the darker sides of his psyche on his long-awaited new album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers . “I am not your savior,” he raps, while almost compulsively revealing his sexual history, a bout with writer’s block, relationship troubles, and more. The album’s brutal honesty and oft-deliberate messiness makes it one of the year’s most fascinating releases, even as it’s earned Lamar some of the first mixed reviews of his career. On the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now , Marcus J. Moore, author of the definitive Lamar biography The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited the Soul of Black America , joins host Brian Hiatt to dig deep on the album. The episode goes song by song through the album, from the brilliance of tracks like “Die Hard” and “Crown” to Lamar’s surprising personal revelations to the widely criticized lyrics of “Auntie Diaries” to the decision to spotlight rapper Kodak Black despite … [Read more...] about Why Kendrick Lamar’s New Album Is His Most Controversial Work

Snoop Dogg will induct his late friend Tupac Shakur into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the April 7th ceremony in Brooklyn, Rolling Stone has confirmed. The two rappers collaborated on All Eyez on Me ‘s “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” and Snoop Dogg has often taken credit for bringing Shakur to Death Row.
