Last New York City Public Payphone Removed
Twitter / @DanLevitan It's officially out with the old, and in with the new for NYC ... cause the Big Apple's last public payphone booth is unplugged. Officials removed the historic gem Monday morning -- located on 7th Ave. and 50th St. in Midtown Manhattan -- and it was truly the last of its kind. And, just like that, no one will be asking for a dime to make a phone call anymore. This marks the end of the New York City public payphone era. There are still 4 full-length so-called "Superman booths" in Manhattan's Upper West Side -- and, as you might expect, they're essentially museum pieces ... where kids use 'em for Instagram photoshoots. There is it goes … pic.twitter.com/88L3KEvNcT — Dan Levitan (@DanLevitan) May 23, 2022 @DanLevitan The city started taking thousands of payphones off the streets, across all five boroughs back in 2015 ... and switched them out for public Wi-Fi hotspots. The Wi-Fi hotspots allow folks to have free Wi-Fi, along … [Read more...] about Last New York City Public Payphone Removed

Is Monkeypox Just the Beginning?
A fresh outbreak of monkeypox in Europe and the United States in recent weeks isn’t just a threat to public health. It’s also a warning sign. More and more dangerous viruses, having evolved in animal populations, are jumping to the human population. Bird flu. MERS. SARS-CoV-1. And of course SARS-CoV-2, which has killed 6.3 million people since the very first infection in Wuhan, China, 30 months ago. It’s not hard to see why these animal-to-human “zoonotic” viral outbreaks are getting more severe and more frequent. We’re chopping down more of the forests where animals live, exposing them to us and us to them. Climate change and the illicit wildlife trade only make the problem worse. As deforestation surges, so does the risk of viral outbreaks. “The combination of climate change, population density and urban expansion is worrisome because I think we will continue to see novel viruses with the capacity to cause human disease,” said Stephanie James, the head of … [Read more...] about Is Monkeypox Just the Beginning?

A married man falls for a trans woman in Joyland , the first Pakistani feature to play in Cannes. Saim Sadiq ’s atmospheric Un Certain Regard drama also explores a whole family, presenting a picture of a clan torn between modernity and tradition in contemporary Lahore. But when he gains work as a backing dancer for the glamorous trans performer Biba (Alina Khan), his eyes are opened to another way of life — and potentially another way of loving. Meanwhile, his wife is frustrated with the expectations of the patriarchal society she lives in, and much less enthusiastic about the prospect of bringing another boy into the family (her sister-in-law has daughters, much to everyone’s disappointment). The Joyland of the title is an amusement park which provides an escape for many of the group, whether dancing with a troupe or screaming out their pain on a fairground ride. Haider … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Saim Sadiq’s ‘Joyland’
