‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ Review: Fan Service Firing on All Cylinders

· October 11, 2019 ·

(This review contains no real spoilers for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie . A more detailed and spoiler-filled take on the film is coming tomorrow morning at 9.) Writing the adventures of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman required at least as much improvisation as the criminal escapades themselves entailed. Neither the drug dealers nor their storytellers were particularly good at sticking to plans. Much of what made Breaking Bad one of TV’s greatest series ever was how both the show and its main characters backed themselves into corners, then found a way out — usually involving a very big explosion. The most important deviation from the blueprint came very early. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan had assumed that Jesse would introduce Walt to the drug world, then get killed. Instead, Aaron Paul proved so utterly compelling in the role that Jesse not only survived, but in time was treated as Walt’s narrative equal. When the series ended, Walt was lying dead on a meth lab … [Read more...] about ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ Review: Fan Service Firing on All Cylinders

‘El Camino’ Cheat Sheet: ‘Breaking Bad’ Episodes to Binge Before the Spinoff Movie

· October 4, 2019 ·

The 62 episodes of Breaking Bad make for one of the most satisfying and consistent viewing experiences in TV history. And with the sequel film, El Camino , set to debut October 11th on Netflix, you may feel inclined to binge the whole series, either to refresh your memory or simply put you in the mood. But 62 hours is a lot to watch a second or third time in the midst of the Peak TV flood, and all but impossible if you’ve put off said binge until now. As someone who’s literally written a book about Breaking Bad , I’ve been asked a lot lately about what episodes might be most useful to watch before the movie comes out. Vince Gilligan has kept so much about the movie under wraps — beyond the fact that it deals with what Jesse Pinkman ( Aaron Paul ) does in the immediate aftermath of the series finale — that it’s hard to say what you need to see. But this would be my suggested refresher course on all things Jesse Pinkman, in order of importance: “Confessions” … [Read more...] about ‘El Camino’ Cheat Sheet: ‘Breaking Bad’ Episodes to Binge Before the Spinoff Movie

Anne Sweeney’s Legacy: Her Hits, Misses & Contribution To Breaking The Glass Ceiling

· March 11, 2014 ·

In April 2004, ABC was wrapping its third consecutive season in last place among adults 18-49. Then-rising star Disney cable executive Anne Sweeney was brought in, greatly expanding her portfolio to include the struggling broadcast network and its sister studio along with her oversight of Disney’s cable properties. She’s had successes — most notably the gutsy 2010 move to install Ben Sherwood , then considered a polarizing figure, as head of ABC News, as he went on to revitalize Good Morning America and take the morning ratings lead away from incumbent Today. (Sherwood’s morning success has him already tipped for a Jeff Zucker-type career trajectory to a big network job at ABC.) There was an initial momentum brought in by three shows developed by the dismissed ABC executives when Sweeney and her lieutenant Steve … [Read more...] about Anne Sweeney’s Legacy: Her Hits, Misses & Contribution To Breaking The Glass Ceiling

‘Too Long; Didn’t Watch’: A New Rolling Stone and OBB Sound Podcast With TV Critic Alan Sepinwall

· January 6, 2021 ·

“I want to watch that, but who has the time?” Like the personal injury lawyer ads ask, has this ever happened to you? In the age of Peak TV, it’s hard to imagine that it hasn’t. When there are more scripted TV shows each year than even a professional TV-watcher like myself can get to, what hope do civilians — or even the people responsible for making these shows — have to keep up with it all? That’s why Rolling Stone has partnered with OBB Sound for a new podcast that hopes to take a sharp blade to the Gordian knot of 21st century television: Too Long; Didn’t Watch . In each episode, I sit down with a celebrity guest — including Kumail Nanjiani, Paul Scheer, Lena Dunham , Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally — who has identified a famous, culture-shaking television show they just never got around to watching, from the explosive character drama of Breaking Bad to the small-town political satire of Parks and Recreation . We watch the very first episode of the show … [Read more...] about ‘Too Long; Didn’t Watch’: A New Rolling Stone and OBB Sound Podcast With TV Critic Alan Sepinwall
