A Disney spokesperson has confirmed to Deadline that Ike Perlmutter is out at the company. Note, Permutter oversaw the consumer products division of Marvel, and isn’t part of the Kevin Feige-led Marvel Studios. Permutter’s Marvel Entertainment will be folded into other parts of the Disney corporate umbrella. Perlmutter’s oversight included comic book publishing (which reportedly earns $40M-$60M annually), as well as game licensing and arena shows. Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment, will stay in place and report to Feige, president of Marvel Studios. Buckley previously reported to Feige and Perlmutter. BFI Invites Union Bectu To Skills Task Force After Being Accused Of “Disappointing” Snub
EXCLUSIVE: The BFI is to involve Bectu with its Skills Task Force after being criticized for the “disappointing” decision to initially exclude the union. Deadline understands Bectu will play a role with the Task Force going forwards. Chaired by former Amazon Studios Europe boss Georgia Brown, the Task Force was unveiled earlier today to address major skills shortages in the UK film and TV sector over the next five years. The 20-plus delegates sitting on the body includes streamers, U.S. studios, UK broadcasters and a number of trade bodies, but has no union representation. The group has met once already without Bectu. Philippa Childs, who heads up the union, described this decision as “disappointing” but said it is “pleased to confirm we have been invited to the next Task Force meeting” after “making clear to the BFI how critical workers’ representation on the Task Force is.” If the Task Force wants to achieve its goal of addressing skills gaps and challenges … [Read more...] about BFI Invites Union Bectu To Skills Task Force After Being Accused Of “Disappointing” Snub
Elon Musk & Steve Wozniak Sign Open Letter Calling For Moratorium On Some Advanced A.I. Systems
Twitter and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak are among the more than 1,100 signatories of an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on the development of advanced A.I. systems. The letter calls on technology companies to cease training A.I. systems that would be more powerful than the latest large language processing system known as the GPT-4. According to Fortune magazine, A.I. power tends to correlate with the model’s size and the number of specialized computer chips needed to train it. Musk has been outspoken in concerns about unrestricted A.I.’s threat to humanity and was was an original cofounder of the OpenAI nonprofit research lab in 2015. He broke with that company in 2018 and has since been critical of the company’s acceptance of billions of dollars in investment from Microsoft. ‘Dune: Part Two’ Won’t Be Debuting At Venice But A Festival Launch Is Still In Play
EXCLUSIVE : Unlike its predecessor, Dune: Part Two won’t be debuting at the Venice Film Festival , we can reveal. The sequel, one of the year’s most anticipated movies, currently has an early November global launch date so Venice is too early, we hear from sources — partly due to the VFX work still to do, partly due to the later release date. Two years ago, Dune opened to much fanfare on the Lido before playing Toronto, New York and other festivals. The Warner Bros release was staggered globally between September and late October when the film launched in the U.S. Dune: Part Two may still get a fevered festival berth, however. New York, which runs September 29 – October 15, is a possibility, for example. The Legendary -produced movie sees Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya , Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skargard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling return to the franchise with new cast members Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Lea Seydoux, … [Read more...] about ‘Dune: Part Two’ Won’t Be Debuting At Venice But A Festival Launch Is Still In Play
