Miss France Eva Colas’ introduction at the recent Miss Universe made her a global viral star, with viewers calling her screeching “France” shoutout anything from satanic to rooster-like. The moment was immortalized on Saturday Night Live , with host Aubrey Plaza as Miss France. She was joined by six other contestants — all shouting the names of their countries — in the final round of Miss Universe, which host Kenan Thompson explained is “one of several shows still on the air where we rate women, but it’s not what you think, we do it based off of looks.” While a parody, the skit (watch it above), is not that far off the real thing. A new Miss Universe was crowned in New Orleans, Louisiana from the 84 beauty queens that entered the pageant. Harnaaz Sandhu, the representative from India and the titleholder from the previous year, crowned R’Bonney Gabriel of USA as the new Miss Universe. The second runner-up went to Andreina Martinez Founier of the Dominican Republic and the first runner-up was Amanda Dudamel of Venezuela. Gabriel is a fashion designer, model and sewing instructor. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design with a Minor in Fibers from the University of North Texas. Gabriel is also the CEO of her own sustainable clothing line. The beauty queen is the first Filipino-American to win Miss USA and according to her official bio , her “mission is for women and young girls to see themselves in her, and feel inspired to conquer their goals by owning who they are.” The night started off with the Top 16 contestants being revealed following a preliminary competition. The only new wide studio release this weekend is the Stage 6 and Screen Gems thriller Missing which collected $760K yesterday off of showtimes that began at 4PM at 2,650 locations. The movie, which is from the creatives behind Sony’s micro-hit , Searching , is expected to do in the mid single digits off 3,000 theaters. Similar to Searching, Missing was made off a very thrifty budget of $7M before P&A. Missing is executive produced by Searching ‘s Timur Bekmambetov, produced by Sev Ohanian and Natalie Qasabian, and storied by that previous title’s Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, the latter who helmed the first title. A performer at Universal Studios Hollywood at the Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular was hospitalized after an accident during one of the shows at the theme park on Monday, January 23. “We can confirm a performer with one of our long-standing show vendors was transported to the hospital following a stunt during an afternoon performance and our thoughts are with him as he receives care. Details surrounding the event are being reviewed,” a spokesperson for Universal Studios Hollywood said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call from the theme park just before 2:10 p.m. regarding an “unresponsive patient,” KTLA reported. The performer received CPR at the scene and was conscious when he was rushed to the hospital. 2018’s sleeper hit, Searching , showed you could create an effective edge-of-your-seat mystery thriller told exclusively through the use of the screens that dominate our daily lives in this century. It starred John Cho as a father whose 16-year-old daughter disappears, leading him to use all the tools of the internet to try and trace her steps in order to find her. Its follow-up, Missing , actually improves on that idea with a different story and set of characters, taking it several leaps further in creating a corker of a suspense picture that looks like what a filmmaking master such as Hitchcock might have made had he been an IT genius too. Watching Searching, which was directed and cowritten (with Sev Ohanian) by Aneesh Chaganty, I kept thinking how the real stars of the piece were the film editors who had to put together a puzzle of images in order to create a coherent story. The 92nd Oscars featured a mix of the expected and the unexpected Sunday, with Neon’s South Korean film Parasite capping the evening by winning Best Picture, making history as the first foreign-language film ever to take the marquee prize. A familiar face is about to matriculate on Bel-Air : Tatyana Ali, who played Ashley Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air , is set to recur as an English literature teacher in the second season of the Peacock reboot. The streamer also released the Season 2 trailer, which teases tumultuous times ahead for Will (Jabari Banks). Ali joins stars Jabari Banks (Will), Adrian Holmes (Philip Banks) and Cassandra Freeman (Vivian Banks) in the new, 10-episode season that kicks off Feb. 23 on Peacock. Ali will play Mrs. Hughes, a teacher at Bel-Air middle school who sees something special in Ashley Banks (Akira Akbar). Elvis director Baz Luhrmann , who has grown close with the Presley family while making and promoting his hit Warner Bros biopic starring Austin Butler, took to social media Friday to tribute Lisa Marie Presley, who died Thursday in Los Angeles after suffering cardiac arrest. She was 54.
