Borat 2 star Maria Bakalova will chair the committee selecting Bulgaria ’s best international film submission for the 2022-23 Oscar race, the country’s National Film Center has confirmed. Bakalova was Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated in the 2020-21 awards season for her performance as Borat’s daughter along Sacha Baron Cohen. She is now busy forging a career in Hollywood where subsequent credits have included The Bubble , Bodies Bodies Bodies and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She has remained loyal to her native Bulgaria where she cut her acting teeth in its independent arthouse cinema scene. Bakalova’s arrival on the Bulgarian Oscar selection committee follows controversy last year, after the selection of Ivaylo Hristov’s drama Fear over Cannes Un Certain Regard selection Women Do Cry , by Vesela Kazakova and Mina Mileva’s and starring Bakalova, prompted accusations of foul play. Ahmaud Arbery’s Killer Reaffirms Not Guilty Plea Following Failed Deal
UPDATE (2/3): Travis McMichael, one of Ahmaud Arbery ’s killers, reaffirmed his plea of not guilty on hate-crime charges Thursday, The New York Times reports. His decision to plead not guilty comes after a federal judge rejected a plea deal on Monday, where McMichael would have pleaded guilty to one hate crime charge in exchange for a recommendation that he serve 30 years in federal prison. *** A federal judge on Monday rejected the plea deal between prosecutors and Travis McMichael on hate-crimes charges for the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, CNN reports . Arbery was chased, shot at close range and murdered in 2020 while going for a run through a residential neighborhood in Georgia. As part of the now defunct deal, McMichael agreed to plead guilty to one hate crime charge in exchange for a recommendation that he serve 30 years in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Lisa G. Wood rejected the plea and gave McMichael until Friday to decide about formally entering a guilty … [Read more...] about Ahmaud Arbery’s Killer Reaffirms Not Guilty Plea Following Failed Deal
Prosecution Begs Jurors to ‘Use Common Sense’ in Closing Arguments for Three Men Charged With Murdering Ahmaud Arbery
The jury finished hearing closing arguments Tuesday morning in the trial of three white men charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery , an unarmed Black man, on a residential street in Brunswick, Georgia . The February 2020 killing occurred while Arbery was running through the neighborhood of Satilla Shores; a father and son believed he looked like someone responsible for nearby break-ins, armed themselves, and pursued him in a pickup truck, with a neighbor joining the pursuit in a second pickup truck. Arbery was shot multiple times at close range. The case went without arrests for more than two months and would later spark protests for racial justice, as many described the shooting as a prominent instance of racial violence. Video of the fatal encounter appeared to show Arbery running between two pickup trucks and looping around the front truck before tussling with a man with a shotgun and then falling, bleeding, to the ground. The verdict in the already highly-profile case … [Read more...] about Prosecution Begs Jurors to ‘Use Common Sense’ in Closing Arguments for Three Men Charged With Murdering Ahmaud Arbery
Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America
Fetty Wap, all of 24 years old, uploaded a song to SoundCloud in April of 2014 and it just, well, stuck around. “Trap Queen” — currently in its 34th week on the Hot 100 — continues to define pop ubiquity, blasting from car speakers in the middle of the day, getting requests at the club that night. The rapper, born Willie Maxwell, is at the Pepsi Center in Denver — far from his home in Paterson, New Jersey. He’s opening for Chris Brown near the tail end of a month-long, countrywide jaunt, but that’s just the tip of his celebrity: Kanye West was an early Fetty Wap supporter; Drake contributed a verse to the remix for his third hit, “My Way”; Taylor Swift covered “Trap Queen” with the rapper in Seattle. However, when Fetty Wap dropped the track list to his self-titled debut album — due out September 25th — A-list names were conspicuously absent. “I didn’t have no features on ‘Trap Queen.’ It was just me,” says Fetty on his tour bus in the shadow of the venue. He’s having his braids … [Read more...] about Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America

Welcome Our Robot Overlords: Why I Think AI Creative Apps Are About to Disrupt the Business of Content
Opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views of Rolling Stone editors or publishers. I so perfectly recall the magical day I bought my first computer. I was about 13 years old and had scrimped and saved from my teenage moneymaking schemes to assemble a grand total of $115. At the local big box store, that would get me a Timex Sinclair 1000. Now understand that I am a digital fossil, but if you’ll just imagine all of this through the early Eighties lens of a Stranger Things episode, it will start to come into focus. These were days when there wasn’t any dominant computer platform. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were just coming out of the garage with the Apple 1. IBM earnestly presented its plain vanilla IBM 5150 (which we can only assume it didn’t realize was also the police Welfare and Institution Code). At the fringes were all kinds of nascent and primitive magical bits of kit from companies like Atari, Commodore and Sinclair. They were cheap, a … [Read more...] about Welcome Our Robot Overlords: Why I Think AI Creative Apps Are About to Disrupt the Business of Content
