From the start Andrews’ work in Ferguson was not your typical Oath Keeper fare. Although the group professes an almost fetishistic respect for the Constitution, its best-known engagements over the years have tended more toward armed confrontations with the government than political or legal efforts to safeguard citizens’ rights. Its most famous operation was a near-bloody standoff, in April 2014, in which a company of Oath Keeper gunmen mustered near Bunkerville, Nevada and chased off federal agents sent to enforce a cattle-grazing judgment against the rancher Cliven Bundy. (This week, Bundy’s son Ammon, took over an Oregon wildlife refuge at gunpoint, accusing government officials of violating ranchers’ constitutional rights.) By virtue of its membership — which is to say, mostly white men of a constitutionalist or libertarian bent — the organization has rarely mounted missions on behalf of black people. … [Read more...] about The Oath Keeper Who Wants to Arm Black Lives Matter
Volunteer work why is it important
Figuring out where Pete Lanteri stood along this spectrum of nuttiness wasn’t easy. On the one hand, he disavowed the notion that the federal government was taking over Texas, repeatedly insisting that all he wanted to accomplish was to sharpen his own skills and in the process “build a network” of like-minded patriots — a message he conveyed not only on his Facebook page but to willing enablers on Fox News radio, in the Houston Chronicle and at the ABC affiliate in Phoenix. On the other hand, he recently wrote on his Facebook page that “EVERY ASPECT OF AMERICA NEEDS A FUCKING PURGE!!!” and “Here’s hoping we are in a shooting war to save this country by the next Fourth of July!!!!!” Moreover, he actually appeared to believe that a handful of amateur observers supported only by some social-media tipsters were going to record the movements of the most professional warriors on the planet on a terrain that stretched over … [Read more...] about Operation Counter Jade Helm: Are Rogue Militants Preparing for War on American Soil?
Early in the fray, a group of antifa combatants, clad in ninja black, had ducked into no-man’s-land and pepper-sprayed an alt-right partisan in a Roman-era gladiator helmet. That set off a series of aggressive scrapes between the anti-fascists and some members of the Rise Above Movement, a group of white supremacists who had shown up wearing skull masks. For the next few hours, as marchers waved signs, the militants in the crowd scuffled at its edges in probing skirmishes. But at 3 p.m., there was an explosion deep in right-wing territory – some would later say it was an antifa M-80 – and the skirmishes erupted into a brawl. The men from Rise Above charged across the antifa frontline: People were body-slammed, punched in the face, kicked in the gut. Tear gas filled the air and the park became a swirling sea of fists and sticks and pipes. As a helicopter shuddered overhead, the park’s perimeter gave way and the conflagration spilled into the streets. Unable to … [Read more...] about Antifa on Trial: How a College Professor Joined the Left’s Radical Ranks
So, I think those are a couple of the things that I’m working on now, is slowing down, being patient, and resting. Resting is very important. When I think back even to the themes of the film—advocating for other people, and finding your courage—this year was filled with a lot of civil unrest. It was filled with a lot of chaos, and I think for everyone who was out there, marching, and protesting, and making a difference, it’s also important to find a time to rest. Because we want to be healthy and available to take care of ourselves. We want to be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor, as well. So, that’s one of the things that I’m working on, that I would encourage other people to do, when we so rarely have the luxury to do that. That’s kind of the mindset that I find myself in right now. … [Read more...] about Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Channels The Indomitable Spirit Of Black Panther Party Co-Founder Bobby Seale In ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’: “I Wore That Like A Badge Of Honor”
