Now, Grant may have hinted that he will be playing a fan-favorite villain from the Star Wars Legends stories and the Star Wars Rebels series. Now, Grant has fueled speculation that he will portray a live-action version of Thrawn after liking a Twitter post that enthusiastically responded to comparisons between Grant and Thrawn. Watch what happens closely, cause Episode IX is starting to get really interesting. Right before the weekend got underway, Disney and Lucasfilm announced the official cast and production start date for Star Wars 9, which is this Wednesday, August 1. Among the many new details released, it was revealed that three new cast members had been added to the movie. Keri Russell was officially confirmed, alongside Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. While the Russell and Ackie characters haven't been revealed, we now have some hot and steamy rumors that Richard E. Grant is playing a new villain. Well, new to the big screen side of things at least Comic books and other novels have resurrected Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Legend side of the Star Wars universe and turned him canon. The influence of Asian cinema on Star Wars is well documented. Famously the Jidaigeki genre of films, predominantly the work of Akira Kurosawa, had a major impact on George Lucas at a time when he was starting to discover world cinema. Set on making a Flash Gordon-esque space opera on a Roger Corman-esque budget, he intended for Star Wars to be a B-Movie hero’s journey (literally) by the book. Inspiration for the peripheral droid character narrative came directly from Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, and Lucas wanted to make his film half in Japanese, with Toshiro Mifune playing Obi-Wan. While the final product appropriated a range of Japanese storytelling devices rather than directly incorporating the culture, it’s a respectful homage as opposed to a shameless take. The ominous figure at the top of the First Order, Snoke and his mysterious backstory was one of the most anticipated parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But Johnson’s radical Star Wars movie left many Snoke fans dissatisfied — and unfortunately, they will likely stay that way.
