The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the re-election of Helen Hoehne to another term as President by an overwhelming margin. Hoehne’s tenure as President has marked a significant period in the history of the HFPA , as the embattled organization behind the Golden Globes has looked to make the “transformational change” necessary to get back into the industry’s good graces. Since August of last year, the org has revised its bylaws and welcomed the addition of external members into its governance for the first time, also filling out its ranks to achieve the the largest and most diverse membership class in its history. The HFPA has also adopted a Code of Conduct, along with mandatory diversity, harassment and sensitivity training for all members. An HFPA member since 2004, Hoehne served on the Board of Directors from 2012-19 and was elected Vice President in 2020 before rising to her post as President. “I am humbled and truly grateful to be … [Read more...] about Helen Hoehne Re-Elected As HFPA President As Golden Globes Org Vies For Award Show’s Return On NBC

Last year, Guillermo del Toro ’s Golden Lion winner, The Shape Of Water, went all the way to a Best Picture Oscar. Del Toro was jury president this year and in announcing his dear friend as the winner, joked, “Now, let me see if I can pronounce the name correctly.” As it did last year with Shape , the press room erupted in applause when Roma won. (The full list of winners is below the original post.) An ode to Cuaron’s Mexico City childhood, Roma , co-produced by Participant Media and Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj, has been embraced here on the Lido and its momentum accelerated when it hit Telluride, as Deadline’s Pete Hammond noted earlier this … [Read more...] about Venice Film Festival: Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ Wins Golden Lion; ‘The Favourite’ Takes Grand Jury Prize – Full List
‘Joker’ Roars To Golden Lion In Venice & Smiles Towards Oscar Race
Todd Phillips ’ Joker already seemed poised for a win at the Venice Film Festival after its eight-minute standing ovation last week. Did anyone think Lucrecia Martel’s jury was going to anoint it with the top honor Golden Lion? Word on the ground mostly surrounded star Joaquin Phoenix ’s turn as the tortured and titular Arthur Fleck. Ultimately, both Phillips and Phoenix returned to Venice tonight to accept the festival’s top honor. Bravo! Venice has increasingly become an awards season launchpad — three of the last five Best Picture Oscar winners began their career on the Lido. Warner Bros has had good luck out of Venice in past years, but world premiering a comic book movie here was a bold risk. So far, it has paid off. After the awards ceremony, jury member Mary Harron said, “They took a comic book mythology that has been done in so many ways and overturned it and revitalized it for now” with compassion. Harron was also very impressed with “the magnificent … [Read more...] about ‘Joker’ Roars To Golden Lion In Venice & Smiles Towards Oscar Race
