Hollywood’s Unions Condemn SCOTUS Ruling Overturning Roe V Wade; SAG-AFTRA, WGA, IATSE & Actors’ Equity, More Join Chorus Of Boos
UPDATED with latest: Hollywood’s unions are reacting Friday to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. SAG-AFTRA has called the decision “archaic and dangerous,” and vowed to “fight to protect women’s right to choice.” “Anyone who believes in the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions should be outraged with today’s archaic and dangerous ruling,” the guild said in a statement Friday. “Every American deserves and is entitled to an equal right to healthcare choice. Today, the United States Supreme Court abandoned that principle in a ruling that empowers states to enact draconian restrictions on healthcare choice and destroy lives, if we allow it. We will continue to fight to ensure the overwhelming majority voice of the people is heard in state and federal legislative bodies. We have the collective power to make certain today’s decision does not overcome the will of the people. SAG-AFTRA will fight to protect women’s right to choice and … [Read more...] about Hollywood’s Unions Condemn SCOTUS Ruling Overturning Roe V Wade; SAG-AFTRA, WGA, IATSE & Actors’ Equity, More Join Chorus Of Boos
‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Was Stuck in Star Wars’ Past. Here’s How ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Does It Better
This post contains spoilers for the whole first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi (now streaming on Disney+ ) and the season to date of Star Trek : Strange New Worlds (now streaming on Paramount+ ). There’s plenty of overlap between the audiences for Star Wars and Star Trek , yet for decades the two fan bases have been pitted against each other like reluctant gladiators dropped into an arena (whether the one where a shirtless Captain Kirk fought in “The Gamesters of Triskelion” or the one where Padme Amidala got her midriff exposed in Attack of the Clones ). Which is superior, they have argued: the action-adventure bent of Star Wars or the more philosophical science fiction of Star Trek ? Which stoic group of people is more compelling: the mystical Jedi knights, or the logic-driven Vulcan race? Is Jim Kirk a more charming rascal than Han Solo? And on and on and on. This spring saw the arrival of new streaming series from both franchises — Obi-Wan Kenobi and … [Read more...] about ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Was Stuck in Star Wars’ Past. ‘The Janes’ And ‘Reversing Roe’ Directors On Supreme Court’s Roe V. Wade Ruling And What The Future Holds: “Just The Tip Of The Iceberg”
EXCLUSIVE: Filmmakers Ricki Stern and Anne Lundberg have seen this day coming. For a long time. Their 2108 Netflix documentary Reversing Roe examined how right-wing activists, politicians and jurists were steadily chipping away at abortion rights across the country, with the goal of eventually overturning Roe v. Wade. Today it happened, in a 6-3 Supreme Court decision that tossed out Roe, permitting states to ban or severely restrict abortion. “I think there was no surprise,” Stern said in an interview with Deadline after the ruling was announced. She said she felt “just absolute sadness and just despair, truly, because it’s the beginning of many, many kinds of Supreme Court decisions that, personally, I think are going to set us back. And as the film illustrates, this is a very politically charged issue, abortion rights. This is really about power and [ignores] the lives of many women who are going to be hurt by this decision.” The new HBO documentary The … [Read more...] about ‘The Janes’ And ‘Reversing Roe’ Directors On Supreme Court’s Roe V. ‘Downfall’ Director Rory Kennedy On How She Deployed CGI To Show How Boeing’s 737 Max Aircraft Went Horribly Wrong
To this day, filmmaker Rory Kennedy won’t fly on a Boeing 737 Max aircraft. “Based on what I know,” she tells Deadline, “I would not get on the 737 Max and I would not let my family get on a 737 Max.” Her point of view is significant because Kennedy has learned a great deal about the aircraft in the course of making her Netflix documentary Downfall: The Case Against Boeing . The Emmy-contending film investigates fateful decisions by Boeing during design and launch of the 737 Max which led to two catastrophic crashes: a Lion Air flight leaving Jakarta, Indonesia in October 2018, and, in March 2019, an Ethiopian Airlines flight departing Addis Ababa. Between the two disasters, almost 350 passengers and crew perished. “I knew about the first airplane crash and was really devastated by the loss of life,” Kennedy says. “And then when another airplane–same kind of aircraft, new to the market–crashed within five months, that really drew my attention. I was really just … [Read more...] about ‘Downfall’ Director Rory Kennedy On How She Deployed CGI To Show How Boeing’s 737 Max Aircraft Went Horribly Wrong
Respectful Global Teams: Lessons From Expatriating
Opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views of Rolling Stone editors or publishers. Ease of travel (pandemic notwithstanding) and rising globalization have given us all unlimited access to each other. People find themselves working across timezones and cultures with remote colleagues, baffled or oblivious to the delicacy with which matters must be approached. As a former expat who’s spent her career building and managing international marketing and comms teams, I understand the intrinsic challenges of communicating and connecting when common language may be a barrier, sensibilities differ or local challenges become distracting. Still, the chance to work with varied business cultures on shared objectives is perennially highly rewarding; the chance to form strong connections around the world makes it a much nicer place for us all. Because it takes … [Read more...] about Respectful Global Teams: Lessons From Expatriating
