The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars , which are set to air April 25 live on ABC. The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention. This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast. ‘RS Interview: Special Edition’ With Bill Gates
The title of Bill Gates ’ new book – How to Avoid a Climate Disaster — is very Bill Gates-ian. Above everything else, Gates is an engineer, a man who sees a problem and immediately wonders how to fix it. Gates’ world is rational, logical, and, in a deep but not simple way, optimistic. After all, if a problem is fixable, you just have to find the best tools for the job and get it done. In his new book, Gates takes on the mother of all problems: the climate crisis . He looks at it not as a moral or political issue (although he is not naïve about either) but as an experienced mechanic might examine a car sputtering on the side of the road, or as a doctor might look at a sick patient. Gates clearly sets out what the goal should be – zero CO2 pollution by 2050, which is widely recognized as the target for a habitable planet – and then analyzes how to get there. Chapters have titles like “How We Plug In,” “How We Grow Things,” and “How We Keep Cool and Stay Warm.” In each, he … [Read more...] about ‘RS Interview: Special Edition’ With Bill Gates

Paul Weller Previews New LP ‘Fat Pop (Volume 1)’ With ‘Cosmic Fringes’ Video
Less than a year after Paul Weller released On Sunset , the former Jam frontman is returning with Fat Pop (Volume 1) , his 16th solo album. With his tour dates in support of his 2020 album postponed, Weller used the Covid-19 quarantine as a catalyst to excavate song ideas stored on his phone. He revisited the tracks, recording just the vocals, piano, and guitar; when restrictions were lifted, Weller and his bandmates reconvened at his Black Barn studio in Surrey, England, to complete the album. In an interview with Rolling Stone in June 2020, the same month On Sunset was released, Weller professed that he was already at work on his next LP. “First of all, I’ve been unemployed for [the first time] in 43 years. The tours were all canceled,” Weller said. “But I’m trying to be positive. I’ve spent more time with my kids. I’ve always been writing loads. So I’m trying to just get on with my next record.” To preview Fat Pop (Volume 1) , Weller shared the video for the … [Read more...] about Paul Weller Previews New LP ‘Fat Pop (Volume 1)’ With ‘Cosmic Fringes’ Video
