In 1991, the Supreme Court fielded a case about two warring phonebook companies in northwest Kansas. Rural Telephone Service Company Inc. refused to license its local information to Feist Publications Inc., so Feist went ahead and copied part of Rural’s phonebook. Rural shrewdly placed false entries in its directory, caught Feist in the act, and sued for copyright infringement. But despite Rural’s ingenuity, the Supreme Court ruled that the raw data collected in phonebooks were not copyrightable. Phonebooks are long gone in 2019, but a similar situation arose this week: The site Genius, known for crowd-sourcing lyrics and annotations from listeners and occasionally artists, filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging that the search engine and its partner company LyricFind lifted verses and choruses wholesale from Genius without attribution or compensation. Much like Rural Telephone Service Company Inc., Genius came up with a neat ruse to help make its case: First, an … [Read more...] about Can Genius Really Win Its Lawsuit Against Google?

Planet of the Apes Knocks Out Spider-Man with $56.5M Box Office Win
Heading into the weekend, 20th Century Fox's War For the Planet of the Apes was riding a wave of critical buzz, which many box office analysts thought could lead to this sequel out-grossing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' opening weekend of $72.6 million. While War for the Planet of the Apes did come out on top, it didn't fare quite so well, earning $56.5 million in its debut, just barely out-grossing the first movie in the trilogy, the $54.8 million earned by 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes. This weekend was expected to be a much closer race between Spider-Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes, especially after Homecoming opened with an impressive $117 million last weekend, which was much higher than most box office projections. However, this new Spider-Man movie suffered quite a big drop, according to Box Office Mojo, falling 61.4% to come in second place with $45.2 million. This brings the movie's domestic total to $208.2 million, with just $139.5 million coming … [Read more...] about Planet of the Apes Knocks Out Spider-Man with $56.5M Box Office Win

The Predator 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Will Include Deleted Scenes
The Predator arrived in theaters this fall under much fanfare. And while most fans had fun watching it, they couldn't help but recognize that it was a mess. Now, the movie is heading home on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD just in time for the holidays. While we won't be getting a director's cut, at least not yet, this release does contain some of the infamous missing scenes we've been hearing about. The Predator reshoots have become stuff of legend, and when the movie hit theaters this past September, most fans couldn't help but notice the haphazard why in which the film was edited. It appeared that huge chunks of exposition were missing, and the viewing experience was not unlike watching Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse for the first time in theaters, only those missing scenes were intentional. Now, we'll get to see some of the scenes that were unceremoniously yanked out of the final cut. They include moments with the Emissary Predators, Olivia Munn's introduction, … [Read more...] about The Predator 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Will Include Deleted Scenes
Keith Richards: The Rolling Stone Interview
Keith plays in a rock & roll band. Anita is a movie star queen. They currently reside in a large white marble house that everyone describes as “decadent looking.” The British Admiral who built it had trees brought from all over the world in ships of the line, pine and cypress and palm. There is an exotic colored bird in a cage in the front garden and a rabbit called Boots that lives in the back. A dog named Oakie sleeps where he wants. Meals are the only recurring reality and 23 at a table is not an unusual number. The ceilings are 30 feet from the floor and some nights, pink lightning hangs over the bay and the nearby town of Ville France, which waits for the fleet to come back so its hotels can turn again into whorehouses. There is a private beach down a flight of stairs and a waterbed on the porch. Good reference points for the whole mise-en-scene are F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender Is The Night and the Shirelles’ greatest hits. There is a piano in the … [Read more...] about Keith Richards: The Rolling Stone Interview
