Blood Brothers: Inside the Music of ‘The Knick’
W hen Steven Soderbergh began work on The Knick – his gritty, historical medical series for Cinemax, set in New York City in 1900 – he enjoyed replicating the era’s look, fashion and stomach-churning surgical practices. But one of the few things that was far too ghastly to replicate was the music. “Oh, it was horrible,” he says with a laugh. “Aesthetically, it’s a really cool period, but the music was absolutely boring and not interesting. Ragtime had just started – and there’s a tiny bit of that in the background of some scenes – but other than that, there was nothing good.” So the director turned to the only person he thought could give The Knick a unique sound: his frequent collaborator, Cliff Martinez. As the director filmed the show, he had been using shimmery EDM flourishes that Martinez had written for the 2012 teensploitation flick Spring Breakers and some of the composer’s wiry synth lines from his own 2011 pandemic disaster film, Contagion , as temporary … [Read more...] about Blood Brothers: Inside the Music of ‘The Knick’
Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley Lead Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2022 Inductees
The Country Music Hall of Fame has announced a new group of inductees for 2022. Rock & roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis will be inducted in the Veteran category, neotraditionalist Keith Whitley will join the Hall in the Modern category, and former RCA Records executive will become a member in the Nonperforming category. Brooks & Dunn handled the announcements in the Hall of Fame’s rotunda, marking the first time in two years that they’d been able to gather in person for the new Hall of Fame class. It was also an occasion that was still heavy with the recent death of 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Naomi Judd for her work in the Judds. Louisiana native Jerry Lee Lewis initially made his impact in rockabilly and rock & roll, cutting the iconic Fifties singles like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” for Sun Records in Memphis and wowing audiences with his boogie-woogie piano and flamboyant, high-octane performances. In the Sixties, he shifted to country … [Read more...] about Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley Lead Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2022 Inductees
Harry Styles Is Done ‘Emotionally Coasting’ After One Direction Days, Doesn’t Want to Be ‘Defined’ by His Music
In a new interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 radio, Harry Styles opened up about the transformative and emotional period that led to the creation of his third solo studio album Harry’s House , out May 20. For Styles, one of the most essential elements of creating the record consisted of making up for lost time — and not just what was lost to the pandemic. Styles reflected on the whirlwind start to his career when he was sorted into One Direction as a teenager and the lighting speed he maintained after going solo. “You miss so many birthdays and stuff like that. And then eventually, it’s just assumed that you’re unable to be at stuff,” Styles told Lowe. “And I think that was one of the things where I was like, ‘Oh, I want to take a second to invest some more time into balancing my life out a little bit.’ This working is not everything about who I am, it’s something I do. And I don’t want to be defined as a person necessarily by what I do all the time. I want to … [Read more...] about Harry Styles Is Done ‘Emotionally Coasting’ After One Direction Days, Doesn’t Want to Be ‘Defined’ by His Music

‘Un Día Normal’ Turns 20: Juanes Remembers
Twenty years ago today, Juanes released his breakthrough album, Un Día Normal. Juanes had previously released Fíjate Bien, his debut LP, which had success locally in Colombia . However, with its mix of catchy pop, cutting rock, and traditional Latin sounds, Un Día Normal took him to an entirely new level. It spent 92 weeks on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, setting a record at the time, and it spun off gigantic back-to-back hits such as “A Dios Le Pido,” “Mala Gente,” and “Es Por Ti,” all songs that helped define pop-rock in Spanish for that era. The album won six Latin Grammy, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year — and it made Juanes a star. Below, he remembers putting together the album during a hectic, emotional time, filled with highs and lows that inspired the sound of the record. He talks about the changes he was going through at the time, how he drew from his past, and how Un Día Normal changed the game for him and Latin … [Read more...] about ‘Un Día Normal’ Turns 20: Juanes Remembers
