A tight MLB game on Wednesday got a whole lot more interesting in the later innings ... when a topless fan ran onto the field, and, for a while, evaded security guards like an NFL running back. The moment just happened in the Braves vs. Brewers game in Milwaukee. Video shot by spectators inside the stadium shows a fan ripped off his shirt and made it down to the field, and then began dancing in center field. The man then sprinted from the outfield to the mound, before eventually making it to home plate ... all while juking stadium officials in the process. NBA Quietly Returns To China’s State-Run TV For Playoffs, First Games Since Oct. 2019
ESPN is reporting that the NBA playoffs are back for China ’s TV viewers after a long banishment over controvesial political statements by an executive. The ESPN story by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru said the return is not being trumpeted by the league, which declined to directly address the return. Instead, it gave a spokeman’s statement extolling the NBA’s right to “inspire and connect people everywhere.’ The story noted the NBA owners collectively have more than $10 billion in asset exposure to China, as well as doing $5 billion of NBA business in the country. That presumably includes broadcast and intenet rights, as well as merchandising and sponsorships. Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey angerred the Chinese government by tweeting “First for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong” during the uprising in that city. ESPN estimates that tweet cost the league hundreds of millions of dollars. It also gave the league a black eye when it hesitated to … [Read more...] about NBA Quietly Returns To China’s State-Run TV For Playoffs, First Games Since Oct. 2019
MLB Reporter Kelsey Wingert Shows Gnarly Injury After Being Hit By Line Drive
Major League Baseball reporter Kelsey Wingert was drilled in the face by a line drive earlier this week ... and in a new photo she posted on Wednesday, you can see the ball did some serious damage to her forehead. The incident happened during the ninth inning of the Colorado Rockies vs. San Francisco Giants game in Denver on Monday ... when Austin Slater belted a foul ball into the Rockies' dugout area. The 95 MPH shot made a beeline right at Wingert, a Rockies reporter, and, unfortunately, she wasn't able to move out of the way. Politically Divided America Is “Very Good For Our Business,” Sinclair Broadcast CEO Says; Primary Ad Surge Points To Big Fall Haul
Stark political divisions in the U.S. have caused a surge in TV ad spending, with primary races in Ohio, Pennsylvania and other key states pointing to a massive haul in the upcoming fall midterms. One key beneficiary of that influx of cash is Sinclair Broadcast Group, the No. 2 owner of local TV stations in the U.S. The company’s CEO, Chris Ripley offered his outlook on political ads and other topics in an appearance at the MoffettNathanson 9th Annual Media and Communications Summit. “Some of these primary races are crazy,” Ripley said. He cited Ohio, where Donald Trump-backed U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance prevailed in a hard-fought contest. The $75 million spent on TV ads for the primary was 40 times more than what was spent on the primary in the last election, Ripley said, and four times more than the last general election. “On the one hand, I lament that we’re in the political environment that we are,” Ripley said. “On the other hand, it’s very good for our … [Read more...] about Politically Divided America Is “Very Good For Our Business,” Sinclair Broadcast CEO Says; Primary Ad Surge Points To Big Fall Haul

Alanis Morissette Will Guide Fans Through Their Subconscious on New Meditation Album
After expanding her musical output to Broadway with her 2019 Tony Award-winning jukebox musical Jagged Little Pill , Alanis Morissette will soon explore a new sonic territory: meditation music. The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter will release The Storm Before the Calm , an album of guided meditations co-written with Dave Harrington, on June 17. In advance of the album, Morissette dropped track “Safety—Empath in Paradise” — an 11-minute new age epic featuring hypnotic drums and soothing drone sounds. “Meditating rests my interior, to the point where I can have access to ideas and visions and inspirations — I can hear my own capital-S Self,” the “Ironic” singer said in a statement. “Music, for me, is like a portal in a way, an invitation into a state of being that I’m not normally in. Making the record kept me super connected and accountable during COVID, when I felt like I was just going to disappear and float away.” This summer, Morissette will embark on a tour of … [Read more...] about Alanis Morissette Will Guide Fans Through Their Subconscious on New Meditation Album
‘Yellowstone’-Style Licensing Deals With Rival Streamers Are No Longer In Paramount’s Forecast, CFO Naveen Chopra Confirms
The strategy to license Yellowstone and other major properties to rival streaming services like Peacock and HBO Max, which Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish has called “unfortunate,” is out the window, according to CFO Naveen Chopra . “We’re no longer licensing big, franchise IP to third parties. Back in the day when Paramount didn’t have its own streaming service, that was the best way to monetize content,” Chopra said during an appearance today at MoffettNathanson’s 9th annual Media and Communications Summit. “Today, that doesn’t necessarily make sense. As some of those things come up, we’ll keep them for our owned and operated platform.” Moderator Michael Nathanson cited heavy viewing on Netflix of Paramount shows like NCIS, wondering if that demand would persuade the company to continue selling off those rights. In answering, Chopra didn’t bring up any specific shows. He joined the company, then known as ViacomCBS, in August 2020, after a large licensing … [Read more...] about ‘Yellowstone’-Style Licensing Deals With Rival Streamers Are No Longer In Paramount’s Forecast, CFO Naveen Chopra Confirms
Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. But Wilsey Was Never the Same After
As Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” recently demonstrated, sometimes it takes a while for a song to catch on and become a hit. Lizzo’s track exploded two years after release, and something similar happened over 30 years ago with Chris Isaak ’s “Wicked Game.” When Isaak’s Heart Shaped World was initially rolled out in 1989, it didn’t make much of an impact. Then, with an assist from director David Lynch, “Wicked Game” caught on and got released as a single in late 1990. Finally, in 1991, the song broke into the Top 10. That was all good news for Isaak, who finally became the star everyone had predicted years before. But it was a mixed blessing for Isaak’s lead guitarist, James Calvin Wilsey , who came up with the swoony guitar lick that ran throughout the Isaak-written song. After a tenure in the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, Wilsey and Isaak formed a rockabilly band, Silvertone, in 1980; by 1985 Isaak was the frontman and Silvertone became the name for his backup group, which … [Read more...] about Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. Nipsey Hussle’s Alleged Killer to Begin Murder Trial Next Month
More than three years after celebrated rapper Nipsey Hussle was gunned down in the parking lot of his Marathon clothing store in a shocking daylight ambush, his alleged killer is due to begin his murder trial in a matter of weeks. Suspected shooter Eric Holder, 32, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday as his public defender announced he’s ready to face a jury in the long-delayed case. When the prosecutor announced he was ready as well, Judge H. Clay Jacke ordered both sides back to court on June 2 to begin jury selection. Once a panel is seated, testimony in the high-profile case is expected to last two weeks. “We have been looking forward to the day that we could present evidence in court on this case. But for the Covid emergency, this case would have been tried quite some time ago,” Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney John McKinney tells Rolling Stone . Prosecutors claim Holder fired at least 10 rounds into Hussle from a black semiautomatic … [Read more...] about Nipsey Hussle’s Alleged Killer to Begin Murder Trial Next Month
