Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize sparks lively — and at times snobby — conversations on the aesthetics of music
If a sampling of some classical music aesthetes on social media is to be believed, April 16 marked the day the music died.A rapper — a rapper! — named Kendrick Lamar was placed on a pedestal as the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in music, joining geniuses of American composition including Aaron Copland, George Crumb, Elliott Carter and dozens of other classically trained artists. Lamar, 30, did so without studying in a conservatory, mastering an acoustic instrument — other than his vocal cords—or composing a single opera.“As if pop doesn’t have enough awards already,” groused one Facebook commenter in a post-announcement conversation started by Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic, USC professor and former Pulitzer juror Tim Page.Another detractor replied that, despite first thinking that the news was written for parody site the Onion, he decided to give Lamar’s “Damn” a chance. His verdict: “It’s incoherent, nasal … [Read more...] about Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize sparks lively — and at times snobby — conversations on the aesthetics of music
Tired of the Smithsonian? These small, quirky DC museums are worth a visit
WASHINGTONWashington is known for its museums. But venture beyond the Mall, which is home to four of the 20 most-visited museums in the world, and you’ll find plenty of smaller, quirkier institutions. Want to learn about great inventions, the history of horse racing in America or how drugs are smuggled across the border? You can, and it’s free. These nine museums are, for the most part, targeted at niche audiences, which means they don’t get the crowds you’ll find at, say, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. But you also don’t need a full day to explore them: Even the ones that offer full, guided tours can take less than an hour to peruse. Think of these spots as entertaining and educational diversions – especially the ones that go out of their way to welcome kids. Check hours carefully, as most of these museums are not open daily.DEA Museum,700 Army Navy Drive, ArlingtonThe Drug Enforcement Administration was formed in 1973, … [Read more...] about Tired of the Smithsonian? U.Va. star Devon Hall keeps the faith, remains determined to prove he belongs in the NBA
PORTSMOUTHDevon Hall had a storybook game in his final appearance at John Paul Jones Arena: 17 points, six assists and five rebounds in the Cavaliers' 62-57 win over Notre Dame on March 3. Afterward, he circled the arena, high-fiving every fan who reached out to touch him."It was an emotional night," he said.In more ways that one. Two hours after the game , as friends, family, coaches and teammates watched, Hall got down on his knees and was baptized at Charlottesville's Northside Baptist Church. It was done quietly, outside the realm of reporters and TV cameras .Hall was raised as a Christian, and says he doesn't know why he'd never taken the step that signifies a person's public acknowledgment of their Christian faith."It was something I wanted to do for a long time," said Hall, who plays his first game in this week's Portsmouth Invitational Tournament on Thursday night with the Portsmouth Sports Club team."Our team chaplain (George Morris) encouraged me to do it. It was me … [Read more...] about U.Va. star Devon Hall keeps the faith, remains determined to prove he belongs in the NBA
Be kind, rewind: The film lovers of Beyond Video (try to) resurrect the days of DVDs, VHS tapes
Watching a movie in your home has never been easier. Find something you want to see on Netflix or Hulu or YouTube or some other site, and moments later, it’s time to sit back, stare at the screen and enjoyAh, but where’s the fun in that? The human interaction, the friendly voice suggesting a movie you never heard of before, the chance for a little pre-film conversation to heighten the experience. Back in the day, you had to go to a store, pore over the shelves, maybe even ask a cinephile clerk for some help. Are people yearning to revisit that? A group of area movie lovers believe many are, enough to support a video-rental store they’re planning to open within the next few months on Howard Street in Remington.“What we’re banking on is that people want that experience,” says filmmaker Joe Tropea, one of about a dozen volunteers who hope to open Beyond Video sometime in the early spring. “Do they want to be able to come in, see stuff and be able … [Read more...] about Be kind, rewind: The film lovers of Beyond Video (try to) resurrect the days of DVDs, VHS tapes
