Seven premiering productions will compete for the Berlinale Series Award next month, with one further world exclusive launch screening out of competition. The winner of the Berlinale Series Award , which was created in cooperation with Deadline, will be chosen on at a presentation ceremony taking place on Wednesday, February 22, by an international jury consisting of actor André Holland ( The Eddy ; Bones and All; Moonlight ); international exec Dana Stern, who founded Shtisel, and Your Honor firm Yes Studios; and screenwriter Mette Heeno, who created Splitting Up Together and Snow Angels . In its ninth edition, the Berlin Film Festival TV screenings will in total present eight world and international premieres, with projects from India, China, Italy and Romania included from the likes of Disney+ and HBO Max. A Small Light , National Geographic’s limited series that depicts the Dutch woman who risked her life to shelter Anne Frank’s family from the Nazis, steers clear of pointing any fingers at the person (or people) who betrayed the family. The project from Grey’s Anatomy alums Joan Rater and Tony Phelan follows Miep Gies (Bel Powley), who agreed to hide her boss Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) and his family during World War I. “Miep always said we are never going to know [who betrayed them],” Rater told reporters Friday at the Television Critics Tour. “I’ll read one account and think, they did it , and then I’ll read a separate one and think, they did it. We felt it was important that we don’t answer that question. We don’t skirt it … we posit a person who could have. The rise and fall of former Spanish King Juan Carlos I will be told in a Sky docu-series later this year that will be teased at Berlin. The as-yet-untitled four-parter will follow a man who was once a hero – celebrated around the world for reforming Spain in the post-Franco era – before allegations surrounding his financial arrangements led to his abdication in 2014. Taking viewers from Madrid to London, Monaco, Geneva, Abu Dhabi and New York, the high-end docu-thriller deals with the allegations surrounding the former King in a struggle for money, sex and power. It comes from Emmy nominee Christian Beetz, who created with Anne von Petersdorff, Gebrüder Beetz Filmproduktion’s Georg Tschurtschenthaler and author Pedro Barbadillo. Stephen Colbert , a noted fantasy fan, has come on board to help develop and produce a series adaptation of Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber . Colbert, via his Spartina banner, will produce the adaptation alongside Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment . It comes seven years after The Walking Dead creator Kirkman announced that he was developing a series based on the books with Vincent Newman Entertainment. The Chronicles of Amber features two series of five books each – The Corwin Cycle and The Merlin Cycle – with a number of short stories and prequels also in the series. It follows the story of Corwin, who awakens on Earth with no memory, but soon finds he is a prince of a royal family that has the ability to travel through different dimensions of reality, called shadows, and rules over the one true world, Amber. Hall, whose latest series Christina in the Country launched last week, and her husband Josh Hall teamed with Nancy Glass’s Glass Entertainment Group, the company behind Frozen In Time , to launch Unbroken Productions . Unbroken will work alongside Glass Entertainment banner Balthazar Entertainment, which produces Christina in the Country as well as Christina on the Coast , which launched its third season in December, on future series.
