EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video UK and Ireland had boarded feature documentary Confessions of a Psycho Killer. The 90-minute feature takes viewers back to 1975, when the body of 63-year-old vicar Anthony Crean was found dead a quiet village in the English county Kent after a frenzied axe attack. A young man, Patrick Mackay, confessed to the killing and a series of follow up police interviews led to a disturbing series of confessions that spread into London. Mackay, now aged 70, has been imprisoned in the UK since 1975 and is considered one of the country’s most deranged and prolific serial killers. Prime Video took the doc through a deal brokered by UK distributor Abacus Media Rights . The feature comes from Woodcut Media and will launch on the streamer on February 1 in the UK and Ireland. ‘One Of Us Is Lying’ & ‘Vampire Academy’ Canceled At Peacock
EXCLUSIVE : A pair of YA drama series are coming to an end at Peacock . The NBCU streamer has cancelled One Of Us Is Lying and Vampire Academy . One Of Us Is Lying ran for two seasons, while Vampire Academy, which comes from Julie Plec, has ended after one. Deadline understands that execs at Peacock were happy with both shows creatively but they just didn’t find the requisite audience to justify further seasons. One Of Us Is Lying , which is based on Karen M. McManus’ novel, launched in October 2021 and was the first Peacock pilot to go to series. It was renewed for a second season earlier this year that aired in October 2022. Vampire Academy was handed a straight-to-series order in May 2021 and premiered in September 2022. HBO Max EMEA Original Programs Chief Antony Root Retiring From Warner Bros. Discovery
Antony Root , the long-serving HBO Max EMEA original programming chief, is to exit his role at Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and retire from the industry. Root will leave his post at the end of March ahead of the launch of the merged HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service. Root has spent 11 years as Executive Vice President of HBO Europe and later HBO Max EMEA after joining from Sony Pictures Television. Last year, his originals team were halted in their tracks when WBD decided HBO Max would stop ordering shows in most of Europe – a decision one source described as “the end of an era.” Most of Root’s European commissioning and production team were later let go, as Deadline revealed in August, but he stayed on. Deadline hears he has been travelling extensively in recent months to visit the remaining local staff. WBD did not discuss succession plans. Dark Comedy Crime Script Wins NFTS & Popcorn Group Writing Prize
EXCLUSIVE : A black comedy crime script has won this year’s NFTS Popcorn Award, which is arranged by the UK’s National Film and Television School and London-based production company, Popcorn Group ( She Will ). Bethan Moore’s script The Widow Making Syndicate follows the story of Zsofia Kovacs who was tried for the murder of 49 men in her Hungarian village, Nagyrev, in the early 20th century. Though fictional, the story is based on the true-life events of the Angel Makers of Nagyrev, who poisoned between 50 and 300 men over a period of 15 years from 1914 – 1929. The award was established to “champion stories with strong identities looking to shape social discourse in a thought-provoking and, importantly, entertaining way”. The award is only open to NFTS writing students and includes a cash prize of £2,500 and the option of a development deal with Popcorn Group. Local distributors are calling the event a success and are hopeful it will become a fixture in the international calendar. Nine French sales houses held screenings events over two days as part of Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris at the Club de l’Etoile. With 106 buyers in town, deals were always likely. Deadline has learned Newen Connect and France TV Distribution were among those to strike international sales.
