Viacom Names Philippe Dauman Chairman After Shari Redstone Rejects Non-Exec Chair Position
Score one for Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman . The company board just named him executive chairman, replacing Sumner Redstone , 92, who has become Chairman Emeritus — the same role he has at CBS following a change announced yesterday . Redstone endorsed the decision; his daughter, Shari , was the only member of the board to vote “no.” The board offered her the job of non-executive chair, which she declined. She’ll remain non-executive vice chair. Dauman’s compensation will not increase with the added title. “Philippe has been instrumental with Sumner in every aspect of Viacom’s success for nearly 30 years and most recently as CEO has taken on the tough task of navigating our future in a time of unprecedented innovation and disruption,” the board’s Governance and Nominating Committee Chairman William Schwartz says. “He has laid out a strategic long-term vision for the company that we fully endorse. We have complete confidence that his dedication to Viacom, his global … [Read more...] about Viacom Names Philippe Dauman Chairman After Shari Redstone Rejects Non-Exec Chair Position
How Mom Rock Became One of America’s Best Young Bands Before Graduating College
When Mom Rock got an invite to perform on the Rock Boat in 2020, they presumed it was a spam email, or a joke. This was a five-day cruise from Miami through the Caribbean headlined by veteran acts like Switchfoot and Sister Hazel, and they were a bunch of college students who’d never played anything bigger than a basement house party. “We were about to write it off before we actually realized it was a real thing,” says Mom Rock singer-guitarist Curtis Heimburger. “We had no idea how we got asked. We eventually just said, ‘Alright, this is amazing fortune and we’re going to run with it.'” That amazing fortune, it turns out, extended beyond just the Rock Boat gig, and it’s well-deserved. Since forming in 2017 at Boston’s Berklee School of Music, drawing inspiration from Weezer, Talking Heads, and Bleachers, Mom Rock have honed an addictive mix of power pop and alt-rock; the first two songs they uploaded to Spotify (“Conversation,” “Grand Romantic Life”) racked up more than a … [Read more...] about How Mom Rock Became One of America’s Best Young Bands Before Graduating College

Low-Budget Film Actors To Get 25-Percent Pay Hike Under New SAG-AFTRA Contracts
Actors working on low-budget films will be paid 25 percent more under new deals approved unanimously by the SAG-AFTRA national board of directors after an all-day meeting Saturday. The pay raise covers three of the union’s low-budget theatrical film contacts: ultra low-budget; modified low-budget, and low-budget. It’s the first time in 10 years that the low-budget rates have been raised. Actors can currently be paid as little as $100 a day under the union’s Ultra Low-Budget Agreement, which covers independent films produced entirely in the United States for less than $200,000. Minimum pay will go up to $125 a day. Under the modified low-budget pact, which covers independent films produced entirely in the US for less than $625,000, the minimums will rise to $335 per day and $1,166 per week. Under the low-budget contact, which covers films produced entirely in the US for less than $2.5 million, the minimums will be going up to $630 a day and to $2,190 a week. Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
Whispering Bill Pifer is dying. The cancer growing in his throat has now all but choked off his raspy voice. A lip reader stood beside him and interpreted his words to the courtroom. They came slow and measured, the damning silent words of a dying Hell’s Angel. “ I understand I would have complete immunity,” Pifer’s lips said. “I won’t testify without it. The time I have left, I want to spend on the street.” Sonny Barger, 33-year-old president of the Hell’s Angels, supposedly talked too much to Whispering Bill while they were both in the Alameda County Jail in Oakland, California. The cold-eyed Barger has a reputation as a braggart, and this time, according to police, something he and Whispering Bill talked about led them to the hilly grasslands near Ukiah in far northern California, where police found three bodies stuffed into abandoned wells on a 153-acre ranch owned by the Angels. Big Tom Shull, 24, and Charles Baker, 30, had both been strangled. Their bodies had been in the … [Read more...] about Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death

Directors Guild Of Canada Finds People Of Color “Significantly Underrepresented” Among Its Members
A first-of-its-kind census conducted by the Directors Guild of Canada has found that people of color are “significantly underrepresented” among its membership, accounting for only 18.3% of the more than 3,000 members who completed a self-identifying survey. According to the report, BIPOC make up 26%-27% of the Canadian population. Black members accounted for only 2.5% of the members surveyed. “The complete results demonstrate a telling lack of diversity among the participating members,” the report found, noting that “underrepresentation of BIPOC communities exists within the guild membership in all regions of the country.” Out of the 3,318 completed questionnaires, 82.8% of the participants identify as Caucasian, with Asian groupings (8.6%) having the second highest percentage, followed by Indigenous (2.9%) and Black (2.5%) members of the guild. According to the report, “the largest share of Black participants is of Caribbean heritage at 51.3% of members identifying as … [Read more...] about Directors Guild Of Canada Finds People Of Color “Significantly Underrepresented” Among Its Members
Association Of Talent Agents Sets Date For Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Session
The Association of Talent Agents , representing more than 100 talent agencies, will hold a training session for members March 20 to review best practices for the prevention of sex harassment and discrimination. “The session will explain what constitutes unlawful sexual harassment, obligations under the law, including the California Talent Agencies Act and best practice policies,” the ATA told its members. “Our expert presenters/panelists will walk us through real-life examples and explore common mistakes. ATA’s blended training and educational session is meant to complement, not replace, your company’s policies and programs. We will explore examples of proper responses by talent agents when placed in the position of a ‘first-responder’ to clients that confide in agents.” The training session, to be held at the SAG-AFTRA Cagney Boardroom, will be chaired by ATA executive director Karen Stuart, a commissioner on the Anita Hill-led Commission on Eliminating Sexual … [Read more...] about Association Of Talent Agents Sets Date For Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Session
