Before there was Be More Chill, before there was Spring Awakening, before teens were swiping on purple eyeliner and lipsynching to Beetlejuice’ s “Dead Mom” on TikTok, there was Rent. The iconic rock musical was a multicultural paean to the lives of impoverished musicians, filmmakers, philosopher-poets, kinksters, runaways, and junkies struggling to survive in the then-squalid Alphabet City area of Manhattan’s East Village, against the backdrop of the HIV / AIDS crisis. Written by Jonathan Larson, who tragically died before Rent opened to widespread acclaim off- Broadway , the musical was revolutionary for not only depicting, but celebrating, the lives of marginalized youth who had never before had their stories told on Broadway, winning multiple Tonys and a Pulitzer, catapulting songs like “Seasons of Love” and “La Vie Boheme” into the zeitgeist and kickstarting the careers of Anthony Rapp, Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, and Jesse L. Martin. Related Stories … [Read more...] about ‘Rent’ Releases Rare Jonathan Larson Demos in Honor of 25th Anniversary

Golden Globes Ratings Looking Like All-Time Low For NBC In Early Numbers
Winners notwithstanding, the obvious shortcomings of the 78th annual Golden Globes on-screen Sunday night were reflected in the ratings for the NBC -broadcast ceremony. Although the Comcast-owned network doesn’t plan to release final numbers from Nielsen until Tuesday, semi-adjusted fast nationals reveal that the bicoastal show hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took a hit from last year. And we don’t just mean the worthy whack the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been taking from some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters over the 87-member group’s lack of Black members. Coming in with a 1.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and about 5.4 million viewers, the 2021 Globes telecast fell about 60% in both categories from the partially adjusted fast national numbers snared last year by the Ricky Gervais-fronted awards show. As you can see from the chart below, this latest round of film credits has the fifth and likely final Purge offering from Blumhouse, as well as another American Pie treat among the five “non-independent” and five independent films that got a piece of the lucrative pie.
