New York Film Critics Circle Names ‘Tár’ As Best Film; Cate Blanchett & Colin Farrell Take Lead Acting Prize: Winners List
The longest-acting movie awards voting committee got it done in about 3½ hours this year, with the New York Film Critics Circle finally naming Focus Features’ Tár as Best film of 2022. The movie, which reps filmmaker Todd Fields return to the camera in 16 years also saw its star Cate Blanchett win Best Actress. The NYFCC is known for bestowing wins to indie movies and the org can take as long as five hours to deliberate on the day they announce wins. Whatever film the group names as Best Picture doesn’t always translate to an Oscar Best Picture win; the last title to do so was 2011’s The Artist. That’s not to say their winners aren’t in the Oscar mix. Nick Hamm’s Free Turn Entertainment Hires The Story Lab Exec Robbie Ashcroft
EXCLUSIVE: Nick and Jon Hamm’s Free Turn Entertainment has hired Robbie Ashcroft as Managing Partner. Ashcroft will join London and Los Angeles-based Free Turn’s management team. He’s joining from The Story Lab and will work on its audio slate and new TV and film slate partnerships among other tasks. Ashcroft was most recently International Development Partner at The Story Lab, where he established a new development and production fund for “original audio projects with multiplatform potential” in partnership with Global Media and Entertainment. This led to the greenlight of podcasts such as John Sweeney’s Hunting Ghislaine . While at The Story Lab, which is the content arm of Japanese ad giant Dentsu, Ashcroft also managed a strategic partnership between the parent company and Yahoo to created mixed reality TV formats from an XR smartstage in Holborn, London. Barbarian producer BoulderLight Pictures has secured a multi-year first-look feature agreement with New Line Cinema , Deadline has confirmed. BoulderLight is a production company founded by J.D. Lifshitz & Raphael Margules which specializes in high-concept, filmmaker-driven genre stories and last year hit on its breakout project with Barbarian — the hit 20th horror from writer-director Zach Cregger, which grossed over $45MM worldwide against a production budget of $4.5MM. ‘Unprisoned’ Showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser Says TV “Absolutely Making Progress” With Black Stories
Yvette Lee Bowser points to Unprisoned — Onyx’s first scripted comedy that stars Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo — as a key example of how far TV has come when it comes to telling contemporary Black stories. “We are absolutely making progress,” said Bowser, whose numerous credits include A Different World, Living Single, black-ish and now serving as showrunner on Unprisoned . “I’ve been in the business 35 years. Wales Hopes To Lure Next ‘Doctor Who’ And ‘Sex Education’ With New Film & TV Studio
EXCLUSIVE: Aria Studios , a new two-stage £1.6M ($2M) facility that boasts 20,000 sqft of filming space, has officially opened for business in Anglesey, North Wales . The facility, located near the popular Welsh region of Eryri, has been established by indie production company Rondo Media and Welsh broadcaster S4C’s commercial arm S4C Digital Media Limited, with the support of the Welsh Government through Creative Wales. The studio has two fully-soundproofed stages and is located amongst acres of unspoiled grounds in the Eryri region. Rondo Media is currently filming the drama series Rownd a Rownd for S4C for 27 weeks in stage 2 at Aria. The studio has said they expect further bookings from drama and film producers commissioned by S4C. Reed Hastings Shifts To Executive Chairman Role At Netflix; Greg Peters New Co-CEO, Bela Bajaria & Scott Stuber Get New Titles
Netflix has a new co-CEO. Netflix on Thursday announced that Greg Peters , who was previously COO and head of product, has been promoted to the role, sharing it with Ted Sarandos. It comes as company co-founder Reed Hastings steps down to become Executive Chairman. Separately, Bela Bajaria , formerly Head of Global TV, has become Chief Content Officer. Scott Stuber has become Chairman of Netflix Film. Hastings said the moves are the last in the company’s “succession planning.” His also said new role of Executive Chairman is one “founders often take,” referencing Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, after they “pass the CEO baton to others.” Hastings co-founded Netflix as a DVD-by-mail company in 1997 and made Sarandos, whom he hired in 2000, Co-CEO in 2020.
