The New York Dolls’ David Johansen and Earl Slick will lead a virtual tribute concert to their late bandmate, Sylvain Sylvain, February 14th at 7 p.m. ET. The show will feature a mix of stories, performances, and videos from an array of Sylvain’s peers and admirers. As we’ll never know what film was denied winning the Palme d’Or over the weekend at the never-happened 2020 Cannes Film Festival — likely due to a caged bat in a Chinese market — this is as good a time as any to size up some of the films that, deserving or not, have won the coveted gold trophy in the 64 years of the festival’s Palme era. Gazing over the list, what’s immediately striking is the number of lasting classics that emerged from the 1960s and 1970s; seven of the top 10 best by my estimation had their world premieres at Cannes during that period, while only three from the past four decades made the grade. By contrast, on my list for the 10 worst Cannes top prize winners were four films from the 1990s and three made since then. Bestselling author Stephen King and Star Trek and Star Wars filmmaker J.J. Abrams team up again after the Hulu series 11.22.63 and Castle Rock for Lisey’s Story. The streamer dropped a first look of the image Friday at TCA and announced that the new series will drop this summer around the world. Based on King’s bestselling novel, Lisey’s Story is a deeply personal thriller that follows Lisey Landon (played by Oscar winner Julianne Moore ) two years after the death of her husband, famous novelist Scott Landon (played by Clive Owen). A series of unsettling events causes Lisey to face memories of her marriage to Scott that she has deliberately blocked out of her mind. Is it merely coincidence that NASA ’s Perseverance landed on Mars on Thursday and the alt-history space race drama For All Mankind saw its second season debut Friday on Apple TV+? Not according to some of the series’ creators and cast. “The timing isn’t bad either I have to give Apple credit for making it right for our launch,” said executive producer Ben Nedivi today on a panel at the virtual TCA “I think they funded Perseverance just for our launch,” added a laughing Joel Kinnaman. “It’s all coming together,” stated EP Ronald D. Moore . All joking aside, and the timing is kind of great for For All Mankind , the much heralded and much watched touchdown on the red planet by the $2.7 billion robotic explorer on Thursday has had a real impact on the show, says Moore.
