See Jason Isbell Pay Tribute to Tom Petty With ‘Room at the Top’
Midway through a week-long residency at the Ryman Auditorium, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit tackled another song by the late Tom Petty during Wednesday night’s show. The band’s version of “Room at the Top” — a song rarely performed by the Heartbreakers themselves, who released the track on their 1999 album Echo and largely abandoned it after the accompanying tour — was both faithful and bittersweet, anchored by a pitch-perfect guitar solo from Sadler Vaden and vocal harmonies from bandmates Jimbo Hart and Amanda Shires. For Isbell, headlining a string of hometown shows at the Ryman Auditorium has become something of a tradition, dating back to his multi-gig run in 2013. During this year’s residency, his Tom Petty covers have become a tradition, as well. The band performed a blistering “Refugee” on Monday night and ripped into “You Wreck Me” on Tuesday, paving the way for Wednesday’s take on “Room at the Top.” Last weekend, Isbell performed a solo version of the Damn the … [Read more...] about See Jason Isbell Pay Tribute to Tom Petty With ‘Room at the Top’
Watch Kesha’s Stark Cover of Tom Petty’s ‘Into the Great Wide Open’
Kesha honored Tom Petty with a stripped-down cover of “Into the Great Wide Open” during her concert in Boston Wednesday. Petty died Monday at the age of 66 after going into cardiac arrest. “I’m not trying to be a downer, but I just think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and I wanna pay my respects,” Kesha said, as her guitarist began to pluck the opening chords to “Into the Great Wide Open.” The cover found Kesha delivering a smoldering vocal performance over the lone guitar, expertly capturing the hope and ruin of Petty’s wannabe rock star, Eddie. Kesha is an avowed Petty fan and has performed twice at the annual Petty tribute concert, Petty Fest . In 2012, she teamed with the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney and the Cabin Down Band for a performance of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” while in 2014 she sang “Free Fallin.'” Kesha recently released her new album, Rainbow . The singer is on tour in support of the LP, with the trek scheduled to wrap … [Read more...] about Watch Kesha’s Stark Cover of Tom Petty’s ‘Into the Great Wide Open’
Ringo Starr on ‘Good Friend’ Tom Petty’s Death: ‘It Was a Shock’
Ringo Starr remembered his “good friend” Tom Petty in a new interview following the rock icon’s death at the age of 66. “I’ll miss Tom. Tom was a good friend. I played with Tom, Tom played with me. I got to know him over the years, really got to know him when he was in the [Traveling] Wilburys ’cause of George [Harrison],” Starr told Billboard . “All through my career we’ve lost really great friends, and people who aren’t my friends, but were great musicians and writers. In our business we’ve lost them very young as well. But overall there’s still a lot of us out there doing what we do.” Starr happened to be in Las Vegas on business at the time of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting, which occurred hours before Petty’s death. “The vibe was pretty low – understandably, of course,” Starr said of the hours after the shooting. “Then in the middle of this meeting someone turned to me and said, ‘ Tom Petty ’s dead.’ ‘Oh my God! What else can go down?’ It was a shock. … [Read more...] about Ringo Starr on ‘Good Friend’ Tom Petty’s Death: ‘It Was a Shock’

Peter Bart: It’s Back To The Future For The Box Office If ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Hits Stratosphere
Box office is big news this week, not so much for its totals as for its totemic significance. Throngs will greet Top Gun: Maverick , but will kids join the grownups to see a nearly 60 year-old actor starring in a sequel to a 36 year-old hit? At the other end of the audience spectrum, will seniors conquer their torpor to catch the new Downton and even lure their kids – the movie is dubiously titled Downton Abbey: A New Era to motivate the youth quadrant. These are edgy days for an industry seeking clues to two big puzzles: Does a broad demographic truly crave a return to the cool comfort of their movie theaters? And, if so, what sorts of movies would best combat their streamer fatigue? In Los Angeles there’s one dark portent: The multiscreen Landmark Theater on Pico, long the cathedral of indie films, will shut its doors forever shortly after the opening of Downton Abbey . Charles S. Cohen, Landmark’s owner who is a dedicated film nerd – he owns 35 other … [Read more...] about Peter Bart: It’s Back To The Future For The Box Office If ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Hits Stratosphere
‘Yellowstone’-Style Licensing Deals With Rival Streamers Are No Longer In Paramount’s Forecast, CFO Naveen Chopra Confirms
The strategy to license Yellowstone and other major properties to rival streaming services like Peacock and HBO Max, which Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish has called “unfortunate,” is out the window, according to CFO Naveen Chopra . “We’re no longer licensing big, franchise IP to third parties. Back in the day when Paramount didn’t have its own streaming service, that was the best way to monetize content,” Chopra said during an appearance today at MoffettNathanson’s 9th annual Media and Communications Summit. “Today, that doesn’t necessarily make sense. As some of those things come up, we’ll keep them for our owned and operated platform.” Moderator Michael Nathanson cited heavy viewing on Netflix of Paramount shows like NCIS, wondering if that demand would persuade the company to continue selling off those rights. In answering, Chopra didn’t bring up any specific shows. He joined the company, then known as ViacomCBS, in August 2020, after a large licensing … [Read more...] about ‘Yellowstone’-Style Licensing Deals With Rival Streamers Are No Longer In Paramount’s Forecast, CFO Naveen Chopra Confirms
