Twitter/@chrismcquarrie Tom Cruise wasn't born on the Fourth of July, but came close -- and on his special day, a filmmaking partner is honoring him by basically saying ... never change, you nutty bastard. The actor turned 60 Sunday, and to ring in the milestone ... director Christopher McQuarrie posted a wild photo to celebrate TC and the death-defying stunts that he still carries out himself to this day ... including on the forthcoming 'Mission: Impossible' movie(s). Getty As you can see, there's Tommy dangling from the wing of an old-timey biplane ... without anyone in the cockpit, it seems. Just Tom hanging on solo, without much assistance. McQuarrie didn't add much context to this pic -- other than wishing Tom a happy 60th -- but it's pretty obvious this is from either "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" or 'Part Two' ... both of which CMQ is helming with Tom in the driver's seat. Tom Cruise practices insane stunt on … [Read more...] about Tom Cruise’s 60th Birthday Honored by ‘M:I’ Director, Wild Plane Stunt

Lawsuit Filed to Stop Actors Equity from Forcing Small Theatres to Pay Minimum Wage
A group of actors and local theatre owners have filed suit against Actors Equity seeking to overturn the union’s decision to force small legit theatres in Los Angeles to pay their actors minimum wage. The plaintiffs, including actors Ed Harris, Amy Madigan and former SAG president Ed Asner, claim the union’s minimum wage mandate will destroy local theatre. In April, Actors’ Equity decided to scrap its 99-seat waiver policy and force small theaters in Los Angeles to pay their actors at least minimum wage – which is currently $9 an hour and going up to $10 next year. The suit claims that Equity’s mandate violates a settlement agreement that resolved a similar lawsuit back in 1989. Plaintiffs in that suit include many of those involved in the latest suit, including actress Salome Jens and theatre owners Joseph Sterns, Maria Gobetti and Tom Ormeny. The ’89 settlement established a Review Committee that would be allowed to review and make recommendations on any substantial changes to … [Read more...] about Lawsuit Filed to Stop Actors Equity from Forcing Small Theatres to Pay Minimum Wage
Jeff Van Gundy: Cavaliers Winning 2017 Finals Would Be LeBron’s Greatest Accomplishment
The NBA playoffs have been prequel to the Finals, the third in a heart-pounding trilogy, in the same way that Episodes I to III of Star Wars are prequel to the original trilogy. Sure, they take place nominally in the same galaxy and involve many of the same people, but the quality gap is wider than Jabba the Hutt. So, as we’ve trudged towards the inevitable – Golden State vs. Cleveland in the rubber match – we’ve become increasingly reliant on our announcers to carry us between stretches of sublimity from Steph, dominance from LeBron or shotmaking from Kyrie. Jeff Van Gundy is perhaps the best in the business at filling the time in blowouts. That’s damning him with faint praise. When he teams with Mark Jackson, Doris Burke and Mike Breen, Van Gundy is the star of the top team in the business. No wonder they’ll be calling all the games for ABC. Since exiting coaching in 2007, Van Gundy has been a perennial candidate for the highest-profile jobs. Though none has panned out yet, … [Read more...] about Jeff Van Gundy: Cavaliers Winning 2017 Finals Would Be LeBron’s Greatest Accomplishment
Golden State Should Go For It
“Records are broken. Championships last forever.” This is what Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said last Saturday as the team recovered from a loss to the Boston Celtics, just their eighth of the season. It was their first home loss in 54 games. If you’re a fan of any NBA team that’s not the Warriors or the San Antonio Spurs – and especially if your team is getting nowhere near the playoffs – try to conceive for just a moment of your team losing their first game at home 76 games into the season. Now come back from that hazy, wildflower-covered, late-summer afternoon in your mind and let’s talk. It’s possible Kerr said this because he genuinely believes it. It’s possible he said it because he thinks his players need to hear it. But it’s also possible Kerr doesn’t believe a word of it – because he shouldn’t. This whole rings-over-records thing is, in this specific case, total bullshit. After beating the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night, the Warriors have … [Read more...] about Golden State Should Go For It
LaVar Ball on Controversy, Kobe Bryant, Building NBA Family Dynasty
LaVar Ball’s house is the only one in his Chino Hills subdivision with a black garage door. Out back, it’s the only one with three different basketball hoops and a shooting machine. Two of them are professional and the third, a gift, is set up over the pool so his kids can jump off and practice dunking. Of course, that’s not the only thing that makes it remarkable. Much like the wisdom handed down to multiple generations of young people who were shot down for dates, it’s what’s inside that counts. And what’s inside is the outspoken scion of the premiere young hoops family in America. Ball’s sons, Lonzo, LaMelo and LiAngelo are all to varying degrees prep phenomena. All three starred first for Ball’s Big Ballers AAU team, then Chino Hills High, and will all at one point pass through UCLA. Lonzo is the first one to make his way into the NBA , presumably to the Lakers with the second pick in Thursday’s draft. Don’t tell LaVar Ball there’s a chance he might not; Ball will brook no … [Read more...] about LaVar Ball on Controversy, Kobe Bryant, Building NBA Family Dynasty
7 Knockout Mike Tyson Cameos
From the beginning of his career, Mike Tyson has been irresistible to Hollywood’s various screens: when you’re the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world with a high-pitched lisp, you’re an instant surreal punchline. Iron Mike has played along in a slew of rap videos, movies ranging from Rocky Balboa to Scary Movie 5, and TV shows ranging from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to The Simpsons (which rendered an unauthorized version of him as Drederick Tatum). Here’s seven of our favorite Tyson cameos over the years. Read an excerpt from Mike Tyson’s ‘Undisputed Truth’ 1. DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson” (1989) Back when Will Smith was a rapper rather than box-office king and show-biz patriarch, he needed a hit to follow up “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” He came up with this tall tale about having an attack of hubris and getting in the ring with Tyson (despite the opening warning of somebody who claimed he saw a Tyson … [Read more...] about 7 Knockout Mike Tyson Cameos
