NFT Art Is Terrible, but That’s OK Because There’s No Such Thing as NFT Art

May 23, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views of Rolling Stone editors or publishers. It was inevitable. With the emergence of any new technology, innovation or major platform, comes the excitement, the rush to understand and profit. What soon follows are the scams, frauds and loss through ignorance and then righteous indignation. There’s a lot of naysaying and prognosticating. Then, usually, as the new thing or way becomes clearer — its value apparent — the utility and durable nature (if it has them) become clear too. In February 2021, Mike Winkelmann (aka Beeple) sold his eponymous “Everydays: the First 5,000 Days” NFT at auction for $69 million . At that moment, the cultural lens pivoted and suddenly everybody was hearing the acronym NFT. The art was what was visible at that moment, both by Beeple and others, and a quick succession of seven-digit auctions quickly earned the full attention of the art market. Cue a rush of art, some of it … [Read more...] about NFT Art Is Terrible, but That’s OK Because There’s No Such Thing as NFT Art

Cannes Review: Vicky Krieps & Gaspard Ulliel In ‘More Than Ever’

May 23, 2022 by deadline.com

Director Emily Atef ’s Cannes Un Certain Regard drama More Than Ever is a careful, fastidious, Tradition of Quality film about impending death that’s easy to admire but won’t exactly pack ‘em in. Vicky Krieps impresses yet again, here playing a woman in her early 30s suffering from a likely fatal condition who travels from France to the fjords of Norway to try to come to terms with her unfair lot in life. It’s an entirely respectable and honorable piece about facing your own demise far before your expected time, but still the kind of thing most people would rather not think about. In Europe in particular, the film will be remembered as the last feature to star the popular French actor Gaspard Ulliel , who died in a skiing accident on January 19. He had also played the young Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising as well as the title character in the biopic Saint Laurent . The spectre of death sadly hangs over this film even more than it was supposed to. … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Vicky Krieps & Gaspard Ulliel In ‘More Than Ever’

Meek Mill — I Saw GIRLS Throwing Bottles … Not Drake or Chris Brown

June 18, 2012 by www.tmz.com

Meek Mill says he didn't throw a single bottle during the W.i.P. nightclub brawl ... neither did Drake nor Chris Brown . Instead, Meek says the real culprits are FEMALE. Meek finally broke his silence with XXLMAG.com ... saying, "Chris and Drake, them two was there, but it's other people that be around that take sh*t to the next level." Meek continued, “Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of sh*t. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle and I was there.” When asked if he threw a bottle, Meek replied, "F*ck no." As we previously reported witnesses say Meek -- who was hanging at Drake's table during the June 13 incident -- was one of the instigators in the fight. He's also rumored to have slept with Rihanna . Meek claims he spoke with Chris Brown on the phone directly after the brawl ... and both sides agreed they had no problem with the other. Mill concluded, "Chris Brown be in … [Read more...] about Meek Mill — I Saw GIRLS Throwing Bottles … Not Drake or Chris Brown

Abigail Disney Fearlessly Challenges Fellow One-Percenters On Distribution of Wealth — Deadline Disruptors

May 23, 2022 by deadline.com

If Abigail Disney had listened to her financial advisers growing up, the heiress would have concentrated on one thing above all else: getting even richer. The granddaughter of The Walt Disney Company co-founder Roy O. Disney says of those early money managers, “They were really lovely, wonderful, nice people who had known me since I was a child… and they taught me some things that it took me a long time to break open and really unpack. Nobody said this out loud—this was just implied—but if you end your life without more than you started with, then you’ve somehow failed. And beyond that, your children should be better off than you were.” But with her, the imperative to compile wealth on top of wealth didn’t take. “I think that’s an appropriate thing, maybe in the middle class or the working class,” she notes. “But I started already with more than I need. Why would I want more or need more?” The social activist, philanthropist and documentary filmmaker has become a … [Read more...] about Abigail Disney Fearlessly Challenges Fellow One-Percenters On Distribution of Wealth — Deadline Disruptors

The xx’s Oliver Sim Reveals He’s Been Living With HIV Since Age 17 in Moving ‘Hideous’ Video

May 23, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

The xx ’s Oliver Sim has released the affecting video for his new song “Hideous,” where he discloses for the first time that he has been living with HIV since he was a teenager. The song appears on his first solo album, Hideous Bastard . It arrives on Sep. 9 via Young. The xx songwriter, bassist, and vocalist enlisted bandmate Jamie xx to produce the album inspired by Sim’s adoration of horror movies and deeply personal experiences. It features guest vocalist Jimmy Somerville, who has been a “powerful voice around HIV and AIDS for decades,” Sim said in a statement. Sim added: “He encouraged me to do the song for myself. He taught me ‘glamour’ is a Scottish word. And, most importantly, he reminded me to not take myself too seriously, no good comes from that!” The Yann Gonzalez-directed video for the song confronts the monsters and fears that haunt us — literally and figuratively. Sim explores loneliness and questions being “hideous” contrasted against buoying string … [Read more...] about The xx’s Oliver Sim Reveals He’s Been Living With HIV Since Age 17 in Moving ‘Hideous’ Video

Laura Dern and Sam Neill Address 20-Year Age Gap in ‘Jurassic Park’

May 23, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

It might’ve been chill back in the day, but the two-decade age gap between Laura Dern and Sam Neill (who play Jurassic Park lovers Alan Grant and Ellie Satler) is . . . questionable. Ahead of the dinosaur film’s new sequel, Jurassic World Dominion , Dern and Neill addressed the difference in age between the onscreen lovers — and how things have changed since. “I am 20 years older than Laura!” Neill told The Sunday Times . “Which at the time was a completely appropriate age difference for a leading man and lady!” The actor said the difference in the couple’s ages “never occurred” to him until he saw an article titled “Old Geezers and Gals” in a magazine about “people like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery acting with much younger people,” he said. “And there I was on the list. I thought ‘Come on. It can’t be true.'” As for Dern, the two characters falling in love felt OK. “It felt completely appropriate to fall in love with Sam Neill,” she said. “And it was only now, when … [Read more...] about Laura Dern and Sam Neill Address 20-Year Age Gap in ‘Jurassic Park’

The Art World’s ‘Mini Madoff’ Faces Sentencing for His $86 Million Fraud

May 23, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Before Inigo Philbrick became known as the art world’s “ mini-Madoff ,” he cultivated a reputation as a wunderkind gallerist. A bon vivant with boyish good looks and even better connections, Philbrick opened two of his own art galleries by his early 30s. Philbrick had enjoyed the backing of a top gallerist and the trust of seasoned collectors. He boasted a comely girlfriend and had ingratiated himself with her family. Philbrick, as it would turn out, was a scammer. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 18, 2021 to one count of wire fraud. At the time, the then 34-year-old Philbrick admitted in court that between 2016 and 2019, he “knowingly engaged” in a scheme to rake in cash using “material representations and omissions” in his business deals, including shady tactics like peddling more shares in an artwork than actually existed. He will be sentenced Monday afternoon for the $86 million fraud. Papers submitted in advance of his sentencing paint a comprehensive, and complicated, … [Read more...] about The Art World’s ‘Mini Madoff’ Faces Sentencing for His $86 Million Fraud
