The Best Albums of February 2021: Slowthai, Julien Baker, Aaron Lee Tasjan, the Band, and More

· March 3, 2021 ·

Julien Baker , Little Oblivions On two standout solo albums, and as a member of the indie supergroup Boygenius , with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus , she’s established herself as one of the leading female singer-songwriters of her generation, both for her music’s muted grandeur and lyrics that seem to dive headlong into emotional chaos. In 2019, Baker took a break from music to finish her undergraduate degree . But she’s emerged a much more proficient artist. After making her previous LPs mostly on guitar and piano, Baker recorded her latest , which she also produced, with a full band, creating a big, steely, momentous-feeling sound that’s much more pop-aware than anything else she’s done. The expansive music does nothing to dilute her lyrical directness. —Angie Martoccio STREAM THE ALBUM The Weather Station , Ignorance Canadian singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman treats Ignorance as a breakup-record with her own dying planet, grappling with what … [Read more...] about The Best Albums of February 2021: Slowthai, Julien Baker, Aaron Lee Tasjan, the Band, and More

Inside Abbey Road’s User-Friendly Makeover

· August 30, 2018 ·

Since college, grime artist Novelist wanted to make music at Abbey Road, the fabled London recording studio where everyone from the Beatles to Adele recorded their hits. “I remember once I told a teaching assistant in my music class, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna go to Abbey Road,’ and you can just tell when somebody’s not taking what you’re saying serious,” the 21-year-old says. “It made me laugh a bit.” Within the past year, though, he was in the famed studio, putting the finishing touches on his sonically complex debut LP, Novelist Guy, which came out this past spring. It’s since been shortlisted for the U.K.’s Mercury Prize. “For me, it was a business transaction,” he says of fulfilling his dream. “It wasn’t just, ‘Oh, yeah, Novelist has found his way into Abbey Road.’ Nah, I bought a session like any other studio. And I was willing to pay that money for that level of quality because, it being my debut album, it’s never gonna fade away.” See Also Abbey Road Studios Is Getting … [Read more...] about Inside Abbey Road’s User-Friendly Makeover

Hear Mike and the Moonpies’ Nostalgic Cover of Fastball’s Nineties Hit ‘The Way’

· May 30, 2019 ·

Alt-rock and country music may seem like strange bedfellows, but in the hands of Mike and the Moonpies they go together like chili and cornbread. In honor of the 45th anniversary of the Hole in the Wall, the Austin bar in which they got their start, the Texas-based road warriors recorded a breezy version of the 1998 hit “The Way” by Fastball, the alt-rock trio who also launched a career out of the long-running dive bar located near the University of Texas. The Moonpies stay mainly faithful to the original — there’s no two-stepping transformation of “The Way” here — but they do increase the tempo to give the loping modern-rock song a more urgent vibe. It’s all tied together by Zach Moulton’s dreamy pedal steel and singer Mike Harmeier’s upper-register vocal delivery. The rendition represents a return to the formative years for the Moonpies, who held down a weekly Monday-night residency at the Hole in the Wall for three years. “The Hole in the Wall gave us our start, as it did so … [Read more...] about Hear Mike and the Moonpies’ Nostalgic Cover of Fastball’s Nineties Hit ‘The Way’

‘The White Tiger’ Author Aravind Adiga On Director Ramin Bahrani And Their Celluloid Bond – Guest Column

· March 3, 2021 ·

Editors note: Aravind Adiga won the Man Booker Prize in 2008 for his debut novel The White Tiger , which his old Columbia University classmate Ramin Bahrani turned into the movie that has been generating awards buzz since its Netflix release in January. Adiga penned a guest column for Deadline about how the pair became fast friends by bonding over Scorsese films in Bahrani’s dorm room, a kinship that has lasted ever since. Back in 1993, the idea that any living writer could come near the Russian novelist Dostoevsky in greatness would have struck me and my undergraduate friends at Columbia University as blasphemy. But this was precisely the claim that a fellow student was making one night as we were studying at the library. Even more shockingly, he was claiming that a living American filmmaker named Scorsese was as good as Dostoevsky. He had a video back in his dorm room that would prove it. Anyone want to see it? He even had Iranian snacks in the freezer sent by his … [Read more...] about ‘The White Tiger’ Author Aravind Adiga On Director Ramin Bahrani And Their Celluloid Bond – Guest Column

Covid Relief Package to Include Billions for Black Farmers

· March 3, 2021 ·

The Covid relief package is providing a platform for a historic Senate newcomer to deliver for a long-struggling constituency: black farmers. Led by Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Senate Democrats are touting a $5 billion provision in the relief bill that will wipe out federal debts for farmers of color, and invest in reforms to help these farmers build generational wealth by keeping their family farms in the family. On a call with reporters Wednesday, Warnock celebrated the inclusion of the Emergency Relief for Farmers of Color Act in the $1.9 trillion Covid package. Warnock said Democrats were acting to “ensure equity in our recovery efforts and address longstanding injustices that have left some communities behind for far too long.” The newly elected Warnock, who is the first black senator to serve from Georgia, underscored that this federal assistance “will not only help farmers of color, but will also lift up the economies of our rural communities working to recover … [Read more...] about Covid Relief Package to Include Billions for Black Farmers
