Kacey Musgraves Transforms Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ Into a Tear-Jerker
Kacey Musgraves is our “Velvet Elvis .” After being featured in one of the film’s trailers, Musgraves’ rendition of Elvis Presley ’s classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is finally here. The track arrives ahead of the release of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic this weekend. On Wednesday, the country-pop songstress dropped the cover, which pares back the swooning original with a simple arrangement of piano and airy vocals. The music video features clips of the film, including a scene where Austin Butler ’s Elvis says goodbye to his daughter Lisa Marie while boarding a plane. It also shares a glimpse of the love (and fight) scenes between Priscilla Presley and Elvis in the movie. Last week, Musgraves retweeted a video of Musgraves as a child opening a present that had an Elvis Presley perfume inside of it with a huge smile on her face. “ tell us your [ sic ] an Elvis fan without telling us your [ sic ] an Elvis fan,” the tweet read. tell us your an Elvis fan without … [Read more...] about Kacey Musgraves Transforms Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ Into a Tear-Jerker

NBCUniversal has exceeded last year’s record-setting upfront ad revenue haul north of $7 billion, company insiders said in confirming the finalizing of upfront dealmaking. Rates increased by high-single-digits, fueled by strong growth in categories like retail, quick-serve restaurants, consumer packaged goods, technology and streaming. Pharmaceuticals led all categories with nearly 40% growth over last year, followed by travel, which climbed 30%. Commitments to Peacock , NBCU’s two-year-old streaming service, doubled from last year to reach $1 billion. The platform got off to a sluggish start in 2020 amid the worst of Covid before gaining traction with originals like Bel-Air and the addition of the WWE Network. In May, parent Comcast reported 28 million monthly users for Peacock, putting it ahead of its projected goal of 30 million to 35 million by 2025. Earlier this month, in a virtual appearance at a Credit Suisse investor conference, NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell … [Read more...] about NBCUniversal Wraps Upfront; Volume Up From 2021 Record, Rates Post High-Single-Digit Percentage Rise, Peacock Pledges Double To $1B

How Did ‘Hallelujah’ Become a Classic? A New Leonard Cohen Doc Explains Why.
Vintage songs are regularly remade, sampled and, most recently, interpolated into new ones . But even in that context, the saga of Leonard Cohen ’s “ Hallelujah ” remains singular. A song that was initially rejected and ignored by the music business in the Eighties has, over the last two or three decades, become a go-to pop hymn for TV talent shows, soundtracks, even a Saturday Night Live sketch. For a long time, “Suzanne” was in the running as Cohen’s leading contribution to the post-rock pop repertoire. “Hallelujah” has now overtaken it: Pick nearly any genre, and you’ll find someone in singing it, whether or not they’re attuned to its knotty, elliptical lyrics. That story is ably unfurled in Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song , co-directors Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine’s new documentary on the tune that refuses to go quietly into the night. Inspired by writer Alan Light’s 2012 book The Holy or the Broken , it tracks the protracted origins of the song (Cohen … [Read more...] about How Did ‘Hallelujah’ Become a Classic? ‘Gay Men Make Up Our Own Rules’: Inside the Making of ‘Bros’
Billy Eichner had one lesson he wanted to impart to Nick Stoller as they attempted to write what would become the first gay romantic comedy release by a major studio: Love is, in fact, not love. “I knew it was such a huge opportunity,” says Eichner, the star and co-writer of Bros , due out Sept. 30. “But what I told him right off the bat is, ‘If we’re going to do this, you have to understand that this is not as simple as doing When Harry Met Sally and swapping in two men.'” Stoller, who directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors , had to shake off some universalist impulses to co-write and direct Bros , which is getting a big push from Universal Studios. “I did come into this being like, ‘Well, all relationships, whether straight or gay or whatever, are, on some fundamental level, the same,’” says Stoller. “And Billy came into this saying, ‘No! It’s super different.’ I kind of went to a class taught by him where he explains, in great … [Read more...] about ‘Gay Men Make Up Our Own Rules’: Inside the Making of ‘Bros’
