Steven Spielberg ’s autobiopic The Fabelmans notched seven Oscar nominations today including Best Picture and the filmmaker’s ninth directing nod. And while Spielberg already counts three Oscar wins –two for directing Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List and Best Picture for the latter– today the blockbuster filmmaker of Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park celebrated his first screenplay nomination ever, in the original category, for The Fabelmans . “I just recently turned 76, where they say, ‘What’s left to accomplish?’ I suddenly get nominated for the first time in my career by the Academy as a co-author of Best screenplay — it made me feel like all those English and creative writing classes paid off!” While Lincoln scribe, Tony Kushner, encouraged Spielberg to start putting his memories down on paper, the project didn’t come to life until after the death of the Jaws director’s parents, plus the onset of the pandemic. BAFTA Noms Snubs & Surprises: ‘All Quiet’ Blazes A Trail While ‘The Fabelmans’ & ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Sink In Major Categories
Six months ago you would have got sky-high odds on the BAFTA nominations being dominated by a German-language film and movies by heavyweights Spielberg, James Cameron and Iñárritu only garnering a handful of nominations between them. That was what came to pass this morning with Netflix’s war film All Quiet On The Western Front pitching a whopping 14 nominations, a record-equalling number for a foreign-language movie (with 2001’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon ) and only two off the all-time record for a single film ( Gandhi scored 16). The mega haul, including nods for Best Film and Director, is the most a film has garnered since The King’s Speech also got 14 back in 2011. It’s a special achievement and a sign of the growing influence and permeability of foreign-language films at awards ceremonies but also with the general public, partly thanks for the streaming revolution. Another movie that has exceeded all expectations is Everything Everywhere All At Once … [Read more...] about BAFTA Noms Snubs & Surprises: ‘All Quiet’ Blazes A Trail While ‘The Fabelmans’ & ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Sink In Major Categories

Seth Rogen Blasts The CW At The Critics Choice Awards: ‘We’re On Your Least Favorite Network’
Seth Rogen took the stage at the Critics Choice Awards to present the winner of Best Comedy Series. However, the comedic actor had some notes for the organizers of the ceremony and proceeded to put the CW , the network airing the event, on blast. Rogen said that it was his first time at the Critics Choice Awards and questioned if they “always give two awards out at the same time.” The actor was referring to the Supporting Actor/Actress category and had a bone to pick with the network. “That was weird,” he noted. “Why do they do that? Are we crunched for time? Get another hour! It can’t be that expensive. You know how I know that? This show airs at 4 p.m. on the CW. That cannot be pricey… timeslot, from my understanding of how this all works.” RELATED: Critics Choice Awards Photos: Live From The Red Carpet and Gala Ceremony Rogen continued roasting the network noting that they had no nominations at the event adding, “I’m not saying the CW is bad. In her debut as host of the Critics Choice Awards , Chelsea Handler opted for a traditional Hollywood roast in her opening monologue. “It is an honor to be your host tonight after everything that we have all been through together over the past few years between Covid, monkeypox, the Don’t Worry Darling press tour. It’s been a lot,” Handler said at the top of her monologue, a reference to the slew of salacious stories Don’t Worry Darling ‘s director, Olivia Wilde, and stars, Harry Styles and Florence Pugh, generated around the film’s release. Prince Harry is everywhere these days, between promoting his memoir, Spare, and Netflix releasing the Harry & Meghan docu-series. He has made a slew of revelations, one of which appears to have struck a chord with Handler. “Niecy Nash-Betts is nominated for Dahmer. The hardware will be doled out at the 21st annual VES Awards on Wednesday, February 15, at The Beverly Hilton. Avatar: The Way of Water will vie for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature — the category that hews closest to the Visual Effects Oscar — against Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick , the film right behind the Avatar sequel on the 2022 list of top … [Read more...] about VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society
